FLEMING GETS PAST FRANKLIN CO.

With the Roanoke Valley District title being decided elsewhere, William Fleming and Franklin County played for pride Friday night.

That didn't prevent a battle in Rocky Mount, where Colonels tailback Lee Suggs dived into the end zone from the 1-yard line to seal Fleming's first district victory of the season, a 20-14 decision.

On fourth-and-three with 4:50 remaining, Franklin County (3-7 overall, 1-3 district) fumbled into the hands of the Colonels' Matt Grogan. He rumbled to the Eagles' 12, setting up Suggs' winning score.

Quarterback Grey Hodges and the Eagles' offense took over on their 35 after the ensuing kickoff with 1:35 left in the game. On first down, Franklin County ran a reverse with Steve Williamson for a 25-yard gain. Hodges then threw three consecutive incompletions, setting up a fourth-and-10 desperation pass. Defensive back Richard Wilson wouldn't let Hodges succeed, however, breaking up the pass and putting the victory on ice for Fleming.

Suggs led the Colonels (4-5, 1-2) with 99 yards on 19 carries. His touchdown, combined with Corey Poindexter's 4-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, Wilson's 48-yard scoring reception from Charles Burnette and a safety accounted for all the Fleming scoring. Grogan and Waris Wade sacked Hodges in the end zone in the second quarter, putting the Colonels up 14-0.

Hodges scored on a 2-yard run and threw an 85-yard touchdown pass to Henry Eggleston for the Eagles.

Glenvar 20, Shawsville 0: Two quick third-quarter touchdowns took the pressure off the Highlanders as they downed the Shawnees in a non-district matchup at Glenvar's field.

After Corey Willis hit Don Elliott with a 36-yard scoring strike midway through the period, Tyler Brown recovered a fumble to give the Highlanders (4-5) the ball again. This time, Willis hit Perry Taylor for 16 yards and another score.

Willis completed five of eight passes for 124 yards and three touchdowns. The Shawnees' Chris Graham connected on 14 of 25 passes for 52 yards.

Lyn Twine led Glenvar with 55 yards rushing on 10 carries. Ronnie Fendlay had 44 on 12 attempts for Shawsville (2-7).

Covington 27, James River 21, OT: Mike Barber scored on a 9-yard run in overtime in Covington as the Cougars (6-3, 3-1) knocked the Knights (7-2, 3-1) out of a first-place tie with Bath County in the Pioneer District.

The Cougars appeared to be in control until James River's Shahan Burrell picked up a blocked field-goal attempt and rumbled 85 yards for a touchdown to make the score 15-13.

Covington extended its margin to 21-13, but the Knights cut their deficit to two points on a 4-yard run by Burrell. The two-point conversion tied the score with 55 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Lord Botetourt 55, Craig County 8: Seven of the Cavaliers' eight touchdowns came on the ground as they cruised to a non-district victory over the Rockets in New Castle.

Wesley Cox tore up the most turf for Botetourt, running for 205 yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries.

Other Lord Botetourt running backs followed Cox's lead: Tim Harris and Rocky Lark each ran for more than 50 yards, with one touchdown and one conversion.

The Cavaliers (2-8) held Craig County (0-9) scoreless until the final period, when Mike Kendall scampered into the end zone from 4 yards out and the Rockets' defense tackled Lark in his end zone for a safety.
