TRIBE CAN'T HALT HENS' WIN STREAK

Leo Hamlett hooked up with Eddie Conti on three touchdown passes Saturday as Delaware defeated William and Mary 23-20 in a Yankee Conference game in Newark, Del.

The Blue Hens (9-0 overall, 7-0 conference) extended the nation's longest NCAA Division I-AA unbeaten streak to 15 games and are off to their best start since their 1972 national small-college championship season.

The Tribe (6-4, 4-3) saw its playoff chances all but dashed.

Delaware built a 16-3 halftime lead on a 30-yard field goal by Sean Leach and touchdown passes of 34 and 7 yards from Hamlett to Conti. The second pass came 13 seconds before halftime and capped an 80-yard drive that took two minutes and 25 seconds.

The Tribe closed to 16-6 on Brian Shallcross' second field goal of the day, an 18-yarder with 8:58 left in the third quarter. But the Hens came back again as Hamlett hit Conti on a 49-yard scoring toss on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Matt Byrne hit Warren Roark on 3-yard scoring toss and Troy Keen scored on a 1-yard run with 2:51 to play as William and Mary closed to 23-20. The Hens then ran out the clock.

Hamlett completed 13 of 25 passes for 231 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for a team-high 59 yards. Conti caught five passes for 119 yards.

The Tribe's Byrne completed 13 of 29 passes for 194 yards, with Josh Whipple catching six passes for 136 yards.

In other games involving Virginia teams:

Richmond 7, New Hampshire 3: Minoso Rodgers ran 2 yards for a touchdown after Rodney Bowens blocked a punt in the second quarter, and the Spiders made that score stand up in a Yankee Conference victory over the Wildcats in Richmond

Richmond (7-1-1, 5-1-0) sacked Chris Bresnahan eight times for 52 yards in losses and held New Hampshire (4-5, 3-4) to 41 yards on 31 rushes.

The Spiders, ranked No.16 in Division I-AA, won despite losing Rodgers, their rushing leader with 839 yards, to a sprained right ankle late in the third quarter.

Bowens, who was converted from defensive back to wide receiver for his final season, was forced to do double duty for the final four minutes after safety Eric Goode suffered a slight concussion late in the final quarter.

Defense dominated throughout the second half, and Richmond finished with 10 punts and nine first downs for the afternoon.

In the final 3:13, with Bresnahan trying to pass the Wildcats to victory, the Spiders came up with three sacks to foil two drives.

A Richmond fumble gave New Hampshire one last chance with about a minute left, but after Bresnahan moved the Wildcats to midfield, he threw three straight incompletions, then was sacked by Shawn Barber on fourth down.

James Madison 27, Northeastern 13: Mike Cawley threw two scoring passes to tie a school record as the Dukes (7-3, 5-2) defeated the Huskies (3-6, 1-6) in a Yankee game in Brookline, Mass.

Cawley, a senior with one game remaining in the regular season, has 40 touchdown passes in his career, tying the record set by Eriq Williams from 1989-1992. Cawley connected with his favorite target, Macey Brooks, for a 68-yard aerial for the first score, then hit Jay Jones with a 15-yarder early in the second period that put JMU ahead to stay.

Cawley connected on 14 of 29 passes for 229 yards, despite being harassed throughout by a hard-charging Northeastern line. He was sacked six times.

Liberty 28, Hampton 14: J.T. Morris ran for 115 yards and a touchdown, and Lawrence Worthington added 93 yards and two scores as the Flames (7-2) ran over the Pirates (6-3) in Lynchburg.

Liberty erased a seven-point deficit with a 21-point second quarter. Morris' 9-yard run tied it 30 seconds into the period, and Worthington put the Flames ahead to stay with a 2-yard run 4:48 before halftime. Antwan Chiles capped the big quarter when he scored on a quarterback draw from the 1-yard line with six seconds remaining in the half.

Hampton, playing its first season in Division I-AA, was penalized 12 times for 88 yards and was outgained 445 yards to 248

Randolph-Macon 28, Bridgewater 20: George Bland ran for one touchdown and threw for another as the Yellow Jackets rallied for four touchdowns in the final quarter to turn back the Eagles in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game in Bridgewater.

Bland threw a 24-yard touchdown pass with 5:55 left as Randolph-Macon (5-3-1, 3-1) took a 21-20 lead. Jamison Barnett added a touchdown on a 2-yard carry with eight seconds to play.

Michael Hurt started the rally, running 3 yards for a score with 9:46 to play, and Bland, who was 11-of-23 passing for 171 yards with two interceptions, scored on a 1-yard run less than two minutes later.

A 25-yard field goal by Michael Padgett with 4:11 gone in the fourth quarter gave Bridgewater (0-9, 0-5) a 20-0 lead. Padgett also kicked a 32-yarder in the third quarter.

Kevin Newman threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Von Lewis and Chris Bryant ran 3 yards for a touchdown for the Eagles.
