BULLDOGS BITE CAVALIERS, CLINCH PIEDMONT

Martinsville's quickness and constant full court pressure enabled the Bulldogs to lock up the top seed in the Piedmont District tournament by defeating Fieldale-Collinsville 62-44 Saturday in a one game playoff for the regular-season title in Ridgeway.

With the win, Martinsville (17-5 overall, 15-3 district) also gets an automatic berth into the Region III tournament.

The Bulldogs built a 16-point halftime lead with a strong second quarter performance, but a lackluster third period allowed the Cavaliers (17-5 overall, 15-3 district) to climb back into the game.

Fieldale-Collinsville pulled to within six points at 46-40, but the Bulldogs then capitalized on several key Cavalier missed shots to pull away for the victory.

Erica Brandon led Martinsville with a game-high 27 points and teammate Tresita Holland added 20. Yvonne Hall led the Cavaliers with 21 points.

The win gives Martinsville a first round bye in the district tournament. They will play the winner of the Chatham-Gretna game. Fieldale-Collinsville's first round opponent is yet to be determined.

Laurel Park 50, Patrick County 42 Laurel Park built an 11-point halftime lead and held on in the second half to upend Patrick County in a Piedmont District game in Martinsville.
