UVA WOMEN TO PLAY HOST TO USA TEAM

Dawn Staley, a former collegiate player of the year at Virginia, will return to her alma mater tonight as a member of the USA Women's Basketball Team.

The national team, which will represent the United States this summer in the Olympics, will take on Virginia at 8 p.m. at University Hall.

The national team is coming off an 83-47 victory over reigning NCAA champion Connecticut in its most recent outing on a 20-game tour. The Cavaliers, beaten by the Huskies in last year's East Region final, were ranked No.1 by The Sporting News in its college basketball yearbook.

Marchetti teamed with Oliver Mayo to reach the semifinal round in doubles play before losing to Harvard's Todd Meringoff and Mitty Arnold 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Meringoff and Arnold won the tournament championship.

Sixth-seeded North Cross and fourth-seeded Roanoke Valley Christian will play host to first-round Virginia Independent School volleyball playoff games at 4:30 p.m. today.

The Raiders (17-10), defending state champions, will face No.11 Timberlake Christian (9-10) while Roanoke Valley Christian (17-11) will play Bishop Ireton (5-15).

The winners of the eight first-round games will meet at North Cross on Saturday to settle the state championship.
