MICROSOFT AIMS AT MAINFRAMES, TO PURCHASE SOFTWARE MAKER

Microsoft Corp. said Monday it would buy Netwise Inc., a privately held maker of software for connecting small computers with large ones.

The deal will allow Microsoft to enter the software business for mainframe computers, which continue to play a key role in the data systems of many large companies and government agencies.

Terms were not disclosed.

Microsoft said Netwise's products will make it easier for customers to use its BackOffice family of software, which includes databases and programming tools, with mainframes.
