CASTLEWOOD, SAYLER DROP RURAL RETREAT

Kelly Sayler scored a career-high 33 points as fifth-seeded Castlewood won its eighth straight game by defeating No.3 seed Rural Retreat 68-58 in a Hogoheegee District quarterfinal game Monday in Rural Retreat.

Sayler scored 18 of her points in the second half, and Castlewood (11-10) made 10 of 19 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter with Sayler connecting on just 6-of-13 free-throw attempts in the final period.

Rural Retreat (13-7), which split with Castlewood in close games during the regular-season, cut a 12-point lead to six in the fourth quarter behind Nicole Hedrick, who scored eight of her 16 points in the final period.

George Wythe 54, Chilhowie 44: Tabitha Cook and Megan Johnson each scored 13 points as the Maroons beat the Warriors in a quarterfinal game of the Hogoheegee District tournament in Wytheville.

Chilhowie pulled to four points with four minutes to go, but George Wythe pulled away with free throws.

Emily Blevins had 13 points for Chilhowie, which finished 9-12. Sandra Jenkins had seven rebounds for George Wythe (13-8).

The Warriors will play the winner of the Northwood-Lebanon contest Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at John Battle.
