FIELDALE-COLLINSVILLE UPSET BY BASSETT

A botched field-goal attempt turned into the winning touchdown for Bassett on Monday night as it pulled off a 19-14 upset of Fieldale-Collinsville, ranked eighth in Group AA, in a Piedmont District game in Collinsville.

Bassett's Jason Barrow picked up a bad snap on a Bengals field-goal attempt in the third quarter and tossed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Devonne Claybrooks. The score allowed Bassett (5-4 overall, 5-3 district) to overcome a one-point deficit.

Fieldale-Collinsville (7-2, 6-2), which already had qualified for the Group AA Division 3 playoffs, had a chance to take the lead in the fourth quarter after recovering a fumble at the Bengals' 10-yard line. But two plays later, the Cavaliers fumbled the ball back to Bassett on the 4.

Carl Watkins was the workhorse for Bassett, with 34 carries for 127 yards and two touchdowns.

Kevin Franklin scored the Cavaliers' touchdowns and rushed eight times for 51 yards.

Magna Vista 29, Martinsville 27: John Tunnell's 27-yard field goal with 5:12 left proved to be the difference as the Warriors knocked the Bulldogs out of the playoff picture with the Piedmont District victory in Martinsville.

Magna Vista (4-5, 4-4) had to survive a late field-goal attempt by the Bulldogs' Jess Wade, who was just wide right on a 44-yard attempt with 1:49 left.

The Warriors won by taking advantage of five Bulldogs turnovers. Chad Blackstock scored on an 8-yard run after Martinsville muffed a punt, and Lewis Hairston scored on a 2-yard run after a fumble, then returned a fumble 15 yards for a touchdown.

Martinsville (6-3, 6-2) was led by Manti Venable, who rushed for 268 yards on 20 carries and scored four touchdowns on runs of 3, 64, 65 and 54 yards - the last giving Martinsville a 27-26 lead in the fourth quarter before Tunnell hit the winner.

Tunstall 46, Laurel Park 0: Ron Martin rushed for 72 yards and Chris Martin added 84 yards in the Trojans' Piedmont District romp over Laurel Park. Ron Martin scored three touchdowns for Tunstall.
