TEEN EVADES WOULD-BE CARJACKER

A man tried to carjack a car driven by a 17-year-old girl as she was stopped at a red light in Southwest Roanoke on Sunday night.

The girl was at Fifth Street and Elm Avenue, waiting to turn west onto Elm, when a man reached in and grabbed her by the hair. He ordered the girl to put the car in park and move over, police said.

Instead, the girl accelerated and fled. She was not injured.

In another incident, a 70-year-old Northwest Roanoke man was beaten as he went outdoors to pick up his newspaper.

Police gave this account: About 5:30 a.m., Lawrence C. Buckner stepped outside his apartment on Hunt Avenue and was hit, knocked to the ground and kicked several times. He passed out.

When he came to, he discovered that $29 was missing from his pocket. He was treated at the Salem Veterans Affairs Medical Center for a broken right shoulder and a bruised right eye.
