WEATHER DIDN'T STOP WALKERS

Almost 100 people participated in the fourth annual American Heart Walk on Sept. 24 in Radford. The event was sponsored by the Radford Unit of the American Heart Association, and occurred despite bad weather. Participants raised more than $5,000, with more donations still arriving.

Sigma Chi fraternity at Virginia Tech has given $4,401.24 to the Free Clinic of the New River Valley. The fraternity raised the money through its annual "Derby Days" competition, in which Sigma Chi works with the university's sororities in a series of competitive events, one of which is fund-raising to benefit a local group. Previous recipients of money from the fraternity have been the Blacksburg Rescue Squad, Habitat for Humanity, and the Blacksburg Sister City Program.

Montgomery County's Kiwanis Club is working with the Comprehensive Health Investment Project to install smoke detectors in the home of CHIP clients in the county.

About 20 families have had the detectors installed, and Kiwanis club members make follow-up visits to provide fresh batteries. The club plans to expand the service to more families next year.

The club has also contributed $1,000 to CHIP, an organization that provides health-care services to low-income families.

A team of erudite competitors from Pulaski Community Hospital walked off with the top place in the third annual New River Valley Spelling Bee, held in September. Anderson & Associates placed second, and Litton Poly-Scientific came in third. The event was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Montgomery County.

New River Pontiac has helped transport a donated car from Franklin County to New River Community College. Students at the college will use the car as an instructional aid in the automotive technology program.
