ALLEGHANY PULLS UPSET

Alleghany's stalling tactics did not work in the first half, but the Mountaineers' conventional offense did the job in the second half as they upset Northside 37-31 in a Blue Ridge District tournament quarterfinal Tuesday at Northside.

The Mountaineers (11-11), who will meet host William Byrd in a semifinal at 6 p.m. Thursday, held the ball for most of the first half, but trailed 8-4. Fifth-seeded Alleghany took a 26-25 lead with 4:30 left in the game and never trailed again.

Lord Botetourt 89, Rockbridge County 43: The Cavaliers' Sarah Hicks surpassed 1,000 points for her career, and Botetourt (19-3) built a 23-point lead and routed the Wildcats (3-16) in a quarterfinal in Daleville.

The Cavs advance to play Salem in a semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at William Byrd High School.

Hicks, a junior, scored 28 points to give her 1,006 for her career. Sara Moore added 19 points for Botetourt.

Pioneer

James River 58, Bath County 45: In Buchanan, the Knights (7-14) pulled away for a quarterfinal victory over the Chargers and will advance to meet Glenvar in a semifinal.

Amy Sprinkle led all scorers with 16 pointsfor James River, which will take on the Highlanders at 7 p.m. Thursday at Dabney-Lancaster Community College in Covington.

Covington 44, Craig County 28: Charlie Laws scored eight of her 11 points in the second quarter as the Cougars (11-10) took a 35-16 halftime lead and never looked back in winning a quarterfinal game over the Rockets (1-18) in Covington.

Joann Helton added 14 for the Cougars (11-10), who will meet Parry McCluer in a semifinal at 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Dabney-Lancaster Community College.

Bonnie Boardwine led Craig County (1-18) with nine points.

Mountain Empire

Grayson County 42, Rocky Gap 41: In Independence, Lindsey Carico came up with an important steal and rebound, then missed two potential game-winning shots in the final seconds, but it was Sally Werth who saved the day for the Blue Devils (6-16) with a put-back at the buzzer.

Carico led the Blue Devils with 10 points and 20 rebounds.

Rocky Gap (2-20) ended its season behind Katie Lewis' 13-point performance. Grayson County goes on to play regular-season district champion Galax at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Galax.

Fort Chiswell 66, Bland 44: Sophomore Toshia Smith tied her career-high with 19 points as third-seeded Fort Chiswell (8-12) rolled past sixth-seeded Bland (0-19) in a quarterfinal in Max Meadows.

Fort Chiswell, which will take on Narrows in a semifinal at 8 p.m. Thursday in Galax, broke open the game by outscoring Bland 29-6 in the second quarter.

Piedmont

Bassett 52, Magna Vista 41: Freshman Heather Miller connected on five of eight free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter to help the Bengals (11-10) hold off the Warriors (13-9) in a quarterfinal in Ridgeway.

Bassett, which will meet Martinsville in a semifinal at 6 p.m. Thursday at Magna Vista, made eight of 13 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter after seeing a 13-point lead cut to six with 1:36 left.

Fieldale-Collinsville 61, Tunstall 42: The Cavaliers (17-6) held the Trojans to one second-quarter point and pulled away late en route to a quarterfinal victory in Collinsville.

Fieldale-Collinsville, which played without T.J. Hayes, who sat out with strep throat, will play the winner of the Laurel Park-Patrick County quarterfinal game at 8 p.m. Thursday in a semifinal at Magna Vista.

Martinsville 74, Gretna 43: The Bulldogs (19-4) took a 19-point lead in the first quarter and never looked back as the Hawks fell in a quarterfinal of the Piedmont District tournament in Martinsville.

The Bulldogs (19-4) move on to face Bassett at 6 p.m. Thursday in a semifinal at Magna Vista. Gretna, a 49-43 winner over Chatham on Monday, ends its season at 6-17.
