STALEY, U.S. RUN AWAY FROM UVA

Dawn Staley returned to University Hall to play basketball Tuesday, this time for the visitors as a member of the women's U.S. national team.

Staley had 12 assists, two steals and three points as Team USA beat Virginia 96-68.

Lisa Leslie led the national team with 23 points, Jennifer Azzi had 17, Katrina McClain added 15 points and 10 rebounds and Ruthie Bolton scored 14 points.

Tora Suber had 20 points for the Cavaliers. Monick Foote added 13 and Jeffra Gausepohl had 12.

Team USA controlled the boards by a 44-27 margin and ran up a 46-29 halftime lead as the Cavaliers made only nine of 28 field-goal attempts. Virginia was 9-of-24 in the second half, but made the most of its chances at the free-throw line, hitting 27 of 30 .

Staley, who led Virginia to a 110-21 record and three Final Four appearances from 1989-92, is one of 11 national team members hoping to use their time with the team to earn a spot on the 1996 Olympic squad.

The team, coached by Stanford's Tara VanDerveer, is in the early stages of a tour that includes games against at least 20 Division I programs, including 18 that played in the NCAA Tournament last season.

Before coming to Charlottesville, the team posted easy victories at Georgia and 1994 NCAA champion Connecticut. Its next game is Friday at Stanford.
