OTHER WESTERN VIRGINIA RACES HELD FEW SURPRISES

A COMEBACK in Augusta County; a new victory for the senator from Bluefield; a win in Buchanan County by the former UMW leader ...

These are the results of other General Assembly races in Western Virginia:

Wilkins re-elected

21 of 24 precincts reporting

Ed Plunkett (D) 6,586--36%

Vance Wilkins (R) 11,320--62%

Eric Sheffield (G) 470---3%

Del. Vance Wilkins of Amherst County, the Republican leader in the House, beat back a stiff Democratic challenge by Augusta County lawyer Ed Plunkett. This was one of the harshest campaigns in the state; Plunkett directed fire at the state highway contracts Wilkins' construction company had received over the years, and the company sued Plunkett for defamation.

Goodlatte aide wins

21 of 21 precincts reporting

Harry Nash(D) 5,712--32%

Steve Landes (R) 11,935--68%

Steve Landes, a former aide to the 6th District's Republican congressman, Bob Goodlatte, will succeed Del. Pete Giesen, R-Waynesboro, who retired. Landes, an Augusta County native who spent a year running Goodlatte's Roanoke office, beat back a strong challenge by Augusta County Supervisor Harry Nash, who had ridiculed Landes as a political hack.
