FERRUM MEN REACH FINAL IN SOCCER

Emerson Umana scored off a rebound on a corner kick in the 75th minute as Ferrum edged Longwood 1-0 on Wednesday in a semifinal of the Virginia Intercollegiate Soccer Association men's tournament in Ferrum.

Ken Chenosky had the assist on the goal for the Panthers (9-7-1). Goalie Stevie Reynolds, a former Franklin County High School standout, made two saves to shut out the Lancers (9-8-2).

Ferrum advances to meet Virginia Wesleyan, ranked eighth in NCAA Division III, at Ferrum on a date to be determined. The Blue Marlins advanced with a 2-1 victory over Mary Washington.

Umana and Reynolds were named to the All-VISA team announced Wednesday. They were joined on the squad by teammates Adam Fowler and Michael Carey.

In other soccer news in the region:

Four Roanoke College players were named first-team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference in women's soccer.

The Maroons matched ODAC champion Randolph-Macon's four first-team selections, but the Yellow Jackets' swept the individual honors, with Erin Hamm named player of the year and Jeff Burns selected coach of the year. Randolph-Macon's Amy Beightol, a former Cave Spring High School standout, made the first team on defense.

Roanoke was represented on the first team by forward Meredith Arnott, midfielder Lisa Franzino, defender Angela Anstutz and goalie Kara Hedges.

Washington and Lee had two first-team selections in forward Michelle Baumann and defender Nicole Johnson. The second team featured Washington and Lee forward Karin Treese, Roanoke midfielder Tori Erickson, W&L midfielder Leighton Kirby, Hollins midfielder Beth Coughlin, Roanoke defender Jenn Miller and W&L defender Lorraine Taurassi.
