ANN ARBOR, Mich. - A woman who lost custody of her daughter to her ex-boyfriend for putting the little girl in day care while attending college regained custody Wednesday.
The state Court of Appeals overturned a judge's order that the girl be put in her father's care. It told the lower court not to consider day care in deciding custody of Maranda Ireland Smith, 4, and ordered a different judge to hear the case.
Maranda has remained with her mother, 20-year-old Jennifer Ireland, while the judge's ruling was under appeal.

House ends ban on Alaskan oil exports
WASHINGTON - The House voted Wednesday to end the 22-year ban on the export of Alaska North Slope oil, a step toward making nearly one-fourth of U.S. oil production available for overseas sales.
In a concession to oil producers, the bill also waives for five years royalties on deep-water oil and gas leases in the Gulf of Mexico and provides for the sale of the Alaska Power Administration.
