THE TIPOF

ALL'S FAIR: More than 100 craftspeople from 11 states will demonstrate and sell their wares today through Sunday at the 26th annual YMCA Crafts Fair in Squires Student Center on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg. Music, entertainment and workshops will round out the fund-raiser for the YMCA's community-service programs. Admission is $1. Hours are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. today and Saturday; noon - 5 p.m. Sunday.

TREE I.D.: Last weekend's winds may have stripped some trees of their leaves. But the Blue Ridge Wildflower Society will still meet Saturday at Peaks of Otter for breakfast at 8 a.m. or at the Visitor Center at 10 a.m. to embark on a winter tree identification walk. Call 384-7429.

SALEM SALUTE: Veterans of all branches of the military service will be honored in a parade at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Salem. Veterans wishing to participate should meet on South Broad Street, near the court facilities, to prepare to march from the Farmers' Market to Longwood Park for a brief ceremony including a remembrance of the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II. The Salem High School Band and Virginia Highlands Bagpipes & Drums will provide music. In case of rain, the ceremony will be held in St. Paul's Episcopal Church in downtown Salem. Call Otto Feuer for additional information at 774-2574.

HELP HUSK: In 1909, Booker T. Washington wrote that corn shucking was a major event leading up to Christmas. Relive those simple times from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Booker T. Washington National Monument near Hardy. Enjoy light refreshments, be entertained and led in songs by musician/storyteller Dylan Pritchett, and help prepare about 500 pounds of corn for feeding to the animals. Call 721-2094.

CHORAL CHORUS: The Rockbridge Chorus will present an evening of English choral music, featuring works by Purcell and Britten, Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Lenfest Center for the Performing Arts on the Washington and Lee University campus in Lexington. Tickets, on sale at the door, are $6 for adults; $3 for students.

SHIP AHOY: The gangplank comes down on the Smith Mountain Arts Council's annual Showboat of Talent fund-raiser, featuring 17 local acts, Saturday at 7 p.m. at Dudley School on Virginia 834 in Wirtz. Tickets are $6 for adults; $3 for children under 12. Call 721-4906.

BIG BAND: The Stardusters, a conglomeration of 16 musicians who share a love of jazz and swing music, spun out of the Roanoke Valley Community Band a little over a year ago. Catch them Sunday, along with Heather Banker and Band and Random Acts of Sax, as part of the Jazz Jam VII from 4-8 p.m. at the Henry Street Music Center in Roanoke. Admission is $5. Call 345-6781.

DISASTROUS DATE: ``Dracula's Blind Date,'' it turns out, is with Doris Van Helsing, who is nearsighted, has swimmer's ear and serves a garlic-dip appetizer. A love connection seems unlikely, to say the least, during this free one-act play-reading Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. on the main stage of Roanoke's Mill Mountain Theatre. Bring lunch to eat during the performance if you wish. Call 342-5792.

ARTY PARTY: The second annual celebration of New Acquisitions to the Community Art Collection at Virginia Western Community College - including refreshments and music by the Terri Allard Group - will be held in the college's Humanities Building on Nov. 17 from 7 to 10 p.m. But the $25-in-advance tickets to help raise funds for the art collection need be ordered by today. Call 857-7385 or 857-6077.
