About 2:45 a.m., a man walked into the Stop In Food Store at 3911 Melrose Ave., asked for a pack of cigarettes, then demanded the cash from the register, Roanoke police said. The man told the clerk not to move and walked behind the counter, holding his hand underneath his shirt as if he had a weapon.
The clerk opened the register drawer, and the man grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash.
No arrests had been made as of Thursday.
