EX-UVA STAR STALEY HAS KNEE SURGERY

Dawn Staley, a member of the U.S. women's basketball team, was to undergo knee surgery Thursday at University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville and is expected to be sidelined for about 21/2 weeks.

Staley, a former Virginia point guard, suffered torn cartilage in her left knee and is expected to miss at least five games on the national team's NCAA tour and hopes to return for the Nov.28 game at the University of Washington.

``I'm very disappointed that I'm going to have to miss the next few games of our NCAA tour,'' Staley said, ``but at the same time, I know I need to take care of myself, and the most important thing is that my knee needs to be ready to go next summer'' at the Olympics in Atlanta.

Richmond football coach Jim Reid suspended starting quarterback Jason Gabrels for Saturday's game with William and Mary after Gabrels was charged with assault in a campus fight.

The fifth-year senior was charged with felonious assault following a fight Saturday night.

Gabrels appeared Monday in Richmond General District Court, and his court date was continued to Nov.17, the day before the Spiders wrap up their regular season at Villanova.

Reid said Gabrels will be suspended for one game.

``Jason is as hard a worker as we have on our team, and he's led us to where we are now. I'd be happy if my son grew up like him,'' Reid said. ``But there were certain circumstances he got caught up in, and we have very strict team rules. I can't make an exception.''

The Spiders (7-1-1 overall, 5-1 Yankee Conference) are ranked No.13 in NCAA Division I-AA, while William and Mary (6-4, 4-3) is ranked No.25.

Reid will start Joe Elrod in Gabrels' place.

Gabrels is the Spiders' second-leading rusher, with 607 yards and five touchdowns, and has completed 50 of 111 passes for 619 yards, four touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Eleventh-ranked Virginia (14-4-2) has received a bid to the NCAA Division I women's soccer tournament and will serve as host for a first-round game next weekend against the winner of tonight's game between Stanford (16-3) and Santa Clara (14-3-2).

The time and date of the second-round women's game has not been determined. The men are expected to be at home for a first-round game Nov.19.
