TELETHON HELPS RAISE $400,000 FOR BU PLAYER

A telethon sponsored by three dozen radio stations raised more than $400,000 on Thursday for Boston University hockey player Travis Roy, who was paralyzed a month ago in his first college hockey game.

Stations from around New England gathered at Boston University's Student Union to raise money for Roy's medical bills. Listeners pledged more than $400,000 by 7:30 p.m.

Roy's teammates, as well as media and sports personalities, manned the phones. Among the celebrities aiding the drive were Cam Neely and Adam Oates of the Boston Bruins, Mo Vaughn of the Boston Red Sox and former Buffalo Bills lineman Fred Smerlas.

Roy, a freshman, was skating his first college shift for the Terriers against North Dakota on Oct.20 when he slammed headfirst into the boards, shattering his fourth vertebra. He was paralyzed from the neck down.
