LIBERTY RALLIES PAST RUSTBURG

Liberty had to battle back from a 15-point halftime deficit to edge Rustburg 44-41 in a Seminole District tournament semifinal Thursday night at the Liberty University Multipurpose Center in Lynchburg.

The Minettes (18-4) were 3-for-30 from the field in the first half as they fell behind 22-7. Liberty outscored the Devils (10-12) by eight in the third quarter and took the lead in the fourth.

Teona Callaham's third bucket of the game, with 30 seconds left, gave the Minettes the lead for the first time, 42-41. Rustburg drove the length of the court before couging up the ball to the Minnettes, and Selena Beyers sealed the victory with a layup. Callaham had all six of her points in the fourth quarter and Beyers had all four of her points in the period.

Sue Cowlbeck led Liberty with eight points and Kellea Whorley added seven.

Kiley Reevis led Rustburg with a game-high 13 points.

The Minettes go on to play Jefferson Forest, a 71-59 winner over Brookville in the other district semifinal, at 7 p.m. Saturday at Liberty for a Region III tournament berth.

New River

Blacksburg 48, Carroll County 33: In Blacksburg, the Indians used a second-quarter run to beat the Cavaliers and win the tournament and a Region IV berth.

After a deadlocked first quarter, Blacksburg (10-12) took advantage of its 2-3 zone defense and forced the tempo to go into halftime leading 24-13. Carroll County (14-8) stormed back in the second half, cutting its deficit to four points in the fourth quarter as it also advanced to regional play. Blacksburg showed why it was the regular-season champion by hanging on for the victory.

The Indians' April Rogers, the leading scorer in the New River District, led all scorers with 16 points. Andrea Feret added 12 points for Blacksburg.

Three Rivers

Radford 59, Shawsville 50: The Bobcats used a seven-point rally in the second quarter to take control early in Christiansburg and earn a Region C tournament berth.

Charlee Taylor scored 10 of her game-high 26 points in the second period, including back-to-back 3-pointers, to spark Radford,. Crystal Hubbard scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half, helping the Bobcats build a 10-point advantage.

Megan Forster led the Shawnees with 22 points, 15 in a short-lived second-half comeback. Staci Harless came off the bench to aid Shawsville with 12 points before fouling out, and Sarah Hagood added 11 in the losing effort.

Shawsville ended its season with the loss, and second-seeded Radford moves on to the district final against top-seeded Floyd County at 8 p.m. Saturday in Christiansburg.

Floyd County 53, Auburn 38: The Buffaloes remained undefeated against Three Rivers District opponents this season with a victory over the Eagles in a semifinal at Christiansburg.

Floyd County (17-5), the No.1 seed in the tournament, will meet Radford in the final at 8 p.m. Saturday. The Buffaloes pressured Auburn the entire game. A change to a 2-2-1 zone press in the third quarter allowed them to pull away.

The Buffaloes were led by Melissa Cantrell, who scored 18 points, had three steals and four assists. Cantrell eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her career on a 3-pointer to start the game. Sara Conner and Sonya Hylton also scored in double figures in terminating the Eagles, scoring 10 points each.

Crystal Moles scored 17 points for Auburn, the tournament's No.4 seed.

Mountain Empire

Fort Chiswell 48, Narrows 46: The Pioneers, seeded third, upset the second seeds in a semifinal in Galax to clinch a Region C tournament berth.

Fort Chiswell took a 9-0 lead in the first quarter on the strength of Amber Gunter's offensive skills. Gunter, who finished with 18 points, scored eight of the Pioneers 13 in the first quarter.

The Pioneers ran a patient offense the entire game to slow the Green Wave. Fort Chiswell played a matchup 2-3 zone, with its guards shadowing Green Wave point guard Melissa Lawrence and forward Suzanne Webb. Webb, Narrows' leading scorer, was held to six points.

The Green Wave led 39-36 until 2:20 left in the fourth, when Gunter nailed one of her three 3-pointers. The Pioneers took the lead and held a 47-43 advantage until Webb hit a 3-pointer.

The Pioneers will take on Galax at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Maroon Tide's gym.

Galax 72, Grayson County 31: The Maroon Tide showed why it was the top seed, running away from the Blue Devils in a semifinal in Galax.

Senior Candi Owen's early outside shooting opened up the inside for senior Tammy Cox, who took advantage by scoring 20 points and pulling down 17 rebounds in three quarters of play. Owen scored 13 points from her point-guard position and Cox's backup, sophomore Keisha Ayers, added 11.

The Maroon Tide advances to play number Fort Chiswell at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Piedmont

Martinsville 65, Bassett 57: The Bulldogs pulled away from a one-point lead in the final quarter to oust the Bengals in a semifinal in Ridgeway.

Tresita Holland and Erica Brandon led Martinsville's fourth-quarter surge. Holland scored 10 of her team-high 19 points in the period and Brandon recorded all of her 11 points in the period. Keshia Mitchell also scored 10 points for the Bulldogs.

Heather Miller paced Bassett with a game-high 33 points as the Bengals were eliminated from postseason play. Jaime Hylton also scored 14 points in the loss.

Martinsville moves on to face Fieldale-Collinsville in the district final at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Magna Vista. The Cavaliers beat Patrick County in the other semifinal to claim a spot in the final.

Fieldale-Collinsville 49, Patrick County 40: In Ridgeway, the Cavaliers claimed a spot in the final and in the Region III tournament by eliminating the Cougars in Ridgeway.

Fieldale-Collinsville held a seven-point halftime lead, then clinched the victory with Yvonne Hall's nine-point fourth quarter. Hall finished with 10.

Summer East led Patrick County with 10 points.
