RADFORD GETS IN WITH WIN AT AUBURN

Radford knew it had to shut down Auburn's big gun, tailback Davis Hughes. The Bobcats did just that as they steamrolled the Eagles 43-6 in a Three Rivers District game Friday night in Riner.

The victory, coupled with James River's loss to Bath County, gave Radford a Region C Division 2 playoff berth.

Not only did the Bobcats' defense hold Hughes to 10 yards on the ground, but it shut him out on the scoreboard.

Radford's offense shifted into high gear on the ground, scoring early and often. Five of the Bobcats' six touchdowns came via rushing plays, with the other coming on a kickoff return.

Larnelle Lewis led the Bobcats (8-2 overall, 3-1 district) with nine carries for a game-high 89 yards. He found the end zone twice on runs of 26 and 8 yards. Eddie Waldron also ran for 80-plus yards, galloping for 82 and the first score of the evening on 10 carries.

Derrick Chapman ran for a 21-yard touchdown and Jamelle Hendricks broke loose for an 8-yard score, helping build a 37-0 lead.

Auburn (5-5, 2-2) refused to be shut out, though, as Jason Phipps connected with Conrad Hughes on a 1yard pass for a touchdown.

On the ensuing kickoff, Elliot Barton fielded the onside attempt an scampered 48 yards for the final touchdown of the night.

Fieldale-Collinsville 42, Laurel Park 15: The Cavaliers took advantage of good field position all night to clinch a tie for the top spot in the Piedmont District with a victory over the Lancers in Martinsville.

Fieldale-Collinsville (8-2, 7-2) will be the top seed from the district in the Region III Division 3 playoffs because it has the most points under the VHSL system.

Mancino Craighead led the assault for the Cavaliers with 198 rushing yards rushing and five touchdowns. Craighead's scoring runs covered 1, 20, 2, 25 and 1 yards.

The Lancers' record dropped to 1-9, 1-8.

Giles 44, Shawsville 15: The Spartans' single-wing attack brought a second consecutive Three Rivers District title to Pearisburg.

Giles (9-1, 4-0) rolled up 379 yards on the ground. Michael Perdue led the offense with 114 yards on 15 carries. Chris Ratcliff only ran three times, but hgad 81 yards and one touchdown and Kevin Slusser ran four times for 78 yards and one touchdown.

The Shawnees (2-8, 1-3) dressed only 18 players for the home game, while the Spartans brought 62. Quarterback Chris Graham led Shawsville with 159 yards and two touchdowns on 18-of-27 passing.

Bassett 23, Dan River 13: The Bengals spoiled the Wildcats' bid for the Piedmont District regular-season crown by defeating Dan River in Bassett.

The Bengals (6-4, 6-3) trailed the entire first half. It was not until Carl Watkins scampered 43 yards that the Wildcats relinquished the lead. Watkins rushed for a game-high 223 yards on 29 carries and scored two touchdowns.

Devonne Claybrooks ran for 115 yards on nine carries as Bassett rushed for 338 yards.

Pocahontas (7-3) scored twice in the first quarter, on John Ruble's touchdown reception and Kevin Williby's 1-yard run. Randy Shupe's 1-yard run made it 20-0 in the third quarter. Shupe finished with 104 yards.

Magna Vista 21, Patrick County 14: In Ridgeway, Jermaine Simmons plunged into the end zone on a 3-yard run shattering the Cougars' hopes for at least a share of the Piedmont District title as the Warriors (5-5, 5-4) surprised Patrick County (7-3, 6-3).

Simmons' touchdown capped a 70-yard fourth-quarter drive after a Cougars field-goal attempt was short and wide left. He ran for 139 yards on 20 carries and the winning score that broke a tie.

Chad Blackstock and Lewis Penn each scored on runs of 20 or more yards in the first half, building a 14-8 Magna Vista lead.

Cougars return specialist Ray Hylton countered the Warrior's offensive output by sprinting 45 yards with a punt to tie the score at the half. Hylton's score, coupled by Junior Penn's 13-yard touchdown trot in the first quarter accounted for all the Patrick County scoring. Penn led the Cougars with 134 yards on 13 carries.

Blacksburg 28, Tazewell 6: The Indians (5-5) built a 28-point lead and turned in a strong defensive effort en route to their victory over the Bulldogs (4-6) in Blacksburg.

The lone bright spot for Tazewell was a seven-play, 86-yard drive in the fourth quarter against the Indians' second-team defense. The Bulldogs were held to 65 yards on the ground and 123 in the air.

After a scoreless first half, Douglas, who carried for 93 of Parry McCluer's 204 yards rushing, got Parry McCluer (5-5) on the board with his touchdown in the third quarter.

Rockbridge County (5-5) had one last chance in the fourth quarter after recovering a Fighting Blues fumble deep in its own territory. Quarterback Greg Stubblefield, who passed for 103 yards, marched his team to Parry McCluer's 15-yard line, but the drive ended with four incompletions.
