A DEAD END IN HAMPTON ROADS

THE ROANOKE Express gets riddled 7-2 by the Admirals in the ECHL.

\ All good things must come to an end, and so did the Roanoke Express' dominance of the Hampton Roads Admirals on Friday.

Hampton Roads got two goals from Rick Kowalsky and four assists from Serge Aubin and methodically steamrolled the Express 7-2 before a Norfolk Scope crowd of 8,362.

Roanoke had beaten Hampton Roads in five of the past six regular-season games between the two teams and also claimed a pair of exhibition victories this fall.

``We'd beaten them a few times, and I'm sure they were determined for that not to happen again,'' Roanoke coach Frank Anzalone said.

``They were primed and ready. They just seemed determined that we weren't going to take it on their ice.

``But we did not compete. We were out of it tonight. One guy played and that was [Tim] Christian. The rest of the team stunk.''

The loss dropped the Express (7-6) three points behind the second-place Admirals in the East Division.

Jeff Jestadt and Christian each had goals, and Dave Stewart and Jon Larson added assists on what was otherwise a bleak night for the Express. Roanoke was outshot 51-27 and gave up three power-play goals.

Anzalone tried switching goalies - Mike Parson in place of Matt DelGuidice - between the first and second periods, but nothing he tried worked on this night.

Hampton Roads (7-1-3), which trails Richmond by a point in the East, took a 3-0 lead on goals by Jeff Kostuch, Kowalsky and Sergei Voronov.

Christian narrowed the lead to 3-1 in the second period on a power-play goal. But Dominic Maltais and Rod Taylor gave the Admirals a 5-1 lead, and they coasted thereafter.

The Admirals got points from 12 players and were without two of their top players - forward David St. Pierre and forward Bob Woods, both out with injuries.

Anzalone said the Admirals, with three players under contract from NHL teams and seven from the American and International leagues, ``will be tough to beat.''
