OFFICIALS RELEASE FIRE VICTIM'S NAME

Fire officials said Brenda G. Mason, 52, was the woman who died in a fire about 11 p.m. Friday at 1931 Dundee Ave. S.E.

Mason's name was not released until officials notified relatives.

District Fire Chief P.A. Taylor said a faulty flue in the home's chimney was blamed for the fire.

Assistant Fire Marshal Marlan Morris said the fire looked suspicious at first, but further investigation ruled out arson.

The house was a complete loss, Morris said.

Firefighters found Mason's body in a second-floor room at the house after Mason's husband called 911 from a neighbor's home.

Mason's husband told officials that smoke from the basement woke him and he was able to escape through a window. He got a ladder from his shed and tried to save his wife, but she did not even make it to the window.
