MARTINSVILLE WRAPS UP A PLAYOFF SPOT

Sometimes, the seemingly unimportant games turn out to be huge.

After Martinsville destroyed winless Gretna 46-0 Friday, the Bulldogs (7-3 overall, 7-2 in the Piedmont District) figured their season was over.

``We collected the gear and pulled the decals off the helmets,'' said Martinsville coach Taylor Edwards.

Just after midnight, Edwards found out his team is likely the fourth one in the Region III, Division 4 playoffs that start Friday. Martinsville will play a first-round game at Salem. Official confirmation will come today when the Virginia High School League officially releases the pairings according to the point standings.

Edwards had to contact his assistant coaches after midnight to make quick plans for the playoffs. Martinsville beat William Byrd out by less than one-tenth of a point after the Terriers were upset at Christiansburg.

There was little doubt Martinsville would close with a victory against a luckless Gretna team. Manti Venable picked up 112 yards on nine carries and scored the first touchdown. Frederick Hairston also scored twice while Roger Martin passed for 88 yards and one touchdown and ran for another.

Alleghany 39, Lord Botetourt 22: At Daleville, in a game between two of Timesland's top rushers, Oliver Jordan sparked Alleghany to its first victory with five touchdowns and 216 yards on 18 carries.

Jordan, Timesland's third-leading rusher, outdueled Lord Botetourt's Wesley Cox, second in Timesland, who scored one touchdown and rushed for 146 yards on 22 carries.

Cox pulled a hamstring after running for 117 yards in the opening half and played sparingly after intermission.

Meanwhile, Jordan scored three touchdowns in the second half as the Mountaineers (1-9 overall, 1-4 in the district), wiped out a 22-13 deficit.

Lord Botetourt (1-8, 1-4) got two touchdowns from fullback Rocky Lark.
