WALKER'S SHOT LIFTS RADFORD IN EXHIBITION

Anthony Walker's 3-pointer with seven seconds left in overtime enabled Radford to defeat B.C. Benston 65-63 in the Highlanders' first basketball exhibition of the season Saturday in Radford.

Darko Krunic missed a running, off-balance shot at the buzzer that would have tied the score and sent it to a second overtime.

The Highlanders tied the score in regulation on Marquiz Williamson's 3-pointer with 12 seconds left. Williamson and Eric Parker finished with 10 points each and Jason Lansdown led the Highlanders with 15.

Paced by four All-South Region runners, the Washington and Lee men's cross country team earned a bid to the NCAA Division III Championship by outdistancing the competition at the Southeast Region Championships at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn.

It was the first time W&L had won the meet, bettering last season's second-place finish. Sophomore Jason Callen finished first for the Generals and fifth overall and was joined in All-Region honors by Brad Paye, Taylor Schultz and Will Olson.

J.J. Marbury of Roanoke College finished third overall, qualifying him for the national meet next week in La Crosse, Wis. David Angell of Roanoke received All-Region honors for his 15th-place finish.

W&L senior Josephine Schaeffer won the South Region individual championship for the third time in her career.

Roanoke native John Hawthorne paced the Virginia Tech men's cross country team to a fifth-place finish with his ninth-place individual performance.

The Roanoke Star White lost to the No. 2 Braddock Road Ponies 1-0 in the semifinals of the Virginia State Championships in Richmond.
