Haskins scored on a 28-yard run in the game's opening drive, starting the wheels turning on VMI's first win in the matchup since 1989.
``I've never been happier about a football team,'' VMI coach Bill Stewart said. ``We are really going to cherish this one.''
VMI improved to 4-6 overall, 3-4 in the Southern Conference, while the Bulldogs dropped to 2-8 and 0-7.
Stanley Myers dived 1 yard to cap a 45-yard drive and put The Citadel on the board. It was the freshman quarterback's eighth touchdown of the year.
But Haskins then ran 58 yards, and a pair of quarterback keepers by Al Lester saw the half end with VMI leading 28-7.
Haskins completed his hat trick with a 5-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Lester completed only five passes.
``I didn't go as crazy as I wanted today,'' Stewart said. ``If the wind had not been blowing as hard as it was, we would have thrown more. Al Lester and our receivers have been playing great for us lately.''
The victory marked the first time VMI earned three conference wins since 1981. Haskins is just 6 yards from setting the all-time rushing mark at VMI.
``We are in control of our own destiny going into the Oyster Bowl [vs. Georgia Southern in Norfolk] next week,'' Stewart said. ``If we beat Georgia Southern, we will tie for fourth place [in the Southern Conference].''
