Officer saves man, 2 boys from blaze

VIRGINIA BEACH - A Virginia Beach police sergeant flagged down by a 12-year-old boy rescued two of the child's brothers and his uncle from a burning town house Saturday.

Sgt. Brian Robertson helped the boys down from the roof, then kicked a door open and ran inside to drag Lynwood Hughes, 34, to safety.

Robertson was on routine patrol about 4 a.m. when he spotted Derrick Hughes running down an alley. He turned a spotlight on the boy, who ran up to the police car yelling that his home was on fire. Robertson radioed for help, then followed Derrick down the alley.

Derrick and his brothers - Adam, 15; Antonio, 14; Dione, 13; and Milton, 10 - had escaped from the fire, but Robertson had to help two of them climb down from the roof.

Robertson then peered into a window and spotted a man sitting or kneeling on the living room floor. Robertson kicked open the front door, ran inside and pushed the man out the door.

``I was only in there a few seconds,'' Robertson said. ``The smoke was so thick and the heat was so intense I could only stand it a few seconds.''

Robertson and Lynwood Hughes were treated for smoke inhalation.

Christian group buys old library

LYNCHBURG - The old Jones Memorial Library building has been sold to a local group that promotes Christian ethics in government, the president of the Patrick Henry Institute said.

After a complicated court process, a judge gave the institute final approval Thursday to buy the 87-year-old building from the George M. Jones Library Association for a token sum of $10.

Patrick Henry Institute President Kevin Clauson said his organization and the library association formally closed the deal Friday afternoon.

After renovation, the old library will be used for a small religious college, a library and a research center that would publish national journals about applying Christian ethics to government, Clauson said.
