MAROON TIDE SWAMPS FORT CHISWELL IN MED

Regular-season champion Galax beat visiting Fort Chiswell 64-49 on Saturday to take the Mountain Empire District tournament crown.

The Maroon Tide finished the regular season and tournament with a record of 21-1. After falling behind early, Galax switched from a zone to a man-to-man full court pressure defense in the second quarter to open up an 11-point halftime lead. Candi Owen's outside shooting opened up the inside for Tammy Cox. Owen poured in 18 points and Cox added 15 and 11 rebounds. Erin Kyle had 11 points and 16 rebounds and Tiffany Williams had 12 points.

Galax next plays at home against Radford in the Region C tournament on Tuesday while Fort Chiswell travels to Floyd County on Tuesday.

Floyd County 68, Radford 38: Floyd County opened up a 14-point lead after the first quarter and cruised to the Three Rivers District tournament title in Christiansburg.

The Buffaloes also won the regular season title. Melissa Cantrell did most of the damage for Floyd County, scoring a game-high 26 points, 21 on seven 3-pointers. Sara Conner added 16 points for the Buffaloes.

Charlee Taylor and Crystal Hubbard scored 12 points each for Radford.

Radford advances to the Region C tournament to play Galax on Tuesday night at Galax while Floyd County stays at home to take on Fort Chiswell.
