THE TIPOFF

PATRIOTS PULLED: Alas, the expiration of federal funding that recently forced the shutdown of select nonessential elements of government has caused cancellation of the United States Marine Band in concert at the Roanoke Civic Center, scheduled for Saturday. The performance will not be rescheduled.

HIGH PHAT: Porkrinds, Lazy Bones and Outrage may sound like causes of and reactions to a high cholesterol count. But actually, they're the acts scheduled to perform tonight from 8 to 11:30 at the Teen Center, 3738 Brambleton Ave., Roanoke. Tickets for students in grades 9-12 are $3 at the door. Call 772-2058.

TALL TALES: The Blue Ridge Storytelling Association, in cooperation with the Roanoke County Parks and Recreation Department, on Saturday at 8 p.m. will host its first evening of storytelling - Tellabration 95! The event, in which 74 storytelling groups nationwide will participate, aims to raise awareness and appreciation of tale telling, especially among adults. Local tellers will include Kathy Coleman, Curley Ennis, Kathy Carter, Sandra Whitt and Barbara Wassell. Tickets are $4 in advance or at the door. Telling starts at 8 p.m. at the Brambleton Center, 3728 Brambleton Ave., Roanoke. Call 387-6086.

MIDNIGHT MADNESS: Cave Spring High School's annual basketball-season kickoff is back for its second year of fun, games and raising food and money for Roanoke Valley charities. The event - patterned after successful collegiate galas and the only one in the state hosted by a high school - will begin Saturday at 9:30 p.m. in Cave Spring's gym. A $2 donation plus a can of food will get you free pizza, sodas, ice cream, games, entertainment and chances to win cool door prizes. Call 772-7550.

SQUARE DEAL: Come on down to the hoedown in Floyd, featuring Grayson County's Konnarock Critters and the Southern Mountain Melody Makers from Willis, and benefit the Old Church Gallery and the Floyd County History Museum. The stepping starts Saturday at 7 p.m. at Floyd County High School. Admission is $5 for adults; $4 for seniors over 65. Call 763-2338.

JOYFUL NOISE: Straight Street, a Christian outreach program committed to providing Roanoke Valley youth with ``positive'' peer pressure, presents NuJoi - pronounced New Joy - in a gospel concert on Saturday at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Roanoke. The four females, known for their uncompromising lyrics and soulful, hip-hop sound, have performed with Michael W. SMith, Commissioned, White Heart and others. A $5 donation will be appreciated. Call 342-2078.

SPEEDY SIGHTHOUNDS: Some of the fastest canine breeds in the world - including Salukis, greyhounds, whippets, borzoi, Scottish deerhounds, Irish wolfhounds, Afghans, Pharaoh hounds, Ibizan hounds, Basenjis and Rhodesian Ridgebacks - on Saturday and Sunday in Fincastle will compete in trials and tests aimed at showing them doing what they do best: hunting by sighting on game. Spectators are admitted free to the event, hosted by the Blue Ridge Association for Sighthounds. It starts at 9 a.m. both days. For information and directions, call 992-5793 or 343-9889.

VINO EVENT: Be among the first to sample 1995's Beaujolais-Nouveau on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Resurrection Catholic Church, Route 122, Moneta. Admission to the annual gathering, hosted by the Lake Area Wine Club with the Roanoke Valley Wine Society, is $10 per person, plus a plate of finger food to share. Reservations are required. Call Lois Treacy, 297-5351 or Jim Knap, 297-6638.

BEACH BENEFIT: Shag to the sounds of the Embers and dream of sand and surf while helping the Kazim Beach Bums help the Shriners' children's transportation fund and burn center. The B.Y.O.B. fund-raiser will start at 9 p.m. on Nov. 25, at the Kazim Temple, 628 Campbell Ave., Roanoke. Admission costs $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Call 989-9782.
