BIRD, Daniel Woodrow, former State Senator, 83, of Bland, died Thursday, November 16, 1995 at his residence. He was born July 6, 1912 to George Thomas and Carrie Burton Bird. He served as Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee and was a great pro-opponent of Agriculture and the family farm. Active in community affairs, he served as a member and officer of the Bland United Methodist Church. Elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1947, Bird served eight years until he was elected to Virginia State Senate, representing several counties in Southwest Virginia (among other duties, Bird served as Chairman of the Commission on Economy in Government Affairs which was the fore-runner of JLARC Commission). Mr. Bird was a Mason and a Director of Dairymen, Inc. and served as Chairman of Executive Committee of the Great Lakes to Florida Highway Association. He served as a Regional Director of the First Virginia Bank Board and more recently was honored as a recipient of the Bland County Outstanding Citizenship Award in 1994. Mr. Bird is survived by his wife of fifty -nine years, Elizabeth Kegley Dunn Bird, of the home; four children, Dr. and Mrs. David S. (Janet) Miller, Bland, Va., Judge Daniel W. GOAD, Joseph Edward, 37, of Greensboro, N.C., beloved son of Clarence and Magdalene Goad of Floyd, Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 15, 1995. Joseph, a native of Virginia was a graduate of Elon College, Elon, N.C., where he obtained degrees in music and mathematics. He was employed as a computer analyst with Jefferson Pilot Life Insurance, Greensboro. He shared his musical talents as pianist, organist, and minister of music at various churches in the Burlington/Greensboro area, most recently at Holly Hill Baptist Church, where he was a member and had served for many years. In addition to his parents, he is survived by: two sisters and brothers-in-law, Wanda and Bobby Combs, Susan and Tony Brown, Floyd; three nieces, Abby Combs, Maggie and Molly Brown, Floyd; one nephew, Alex Combs, Floyd; lifelong friend, Nathan Carroll; a special family, Frances, Lambert, Sandra and Andy Gentry; many other dear friends from Holly Hill and other special ones in the North Carolina area. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Walter and Maude Martin and Eddie and Ada Goad. The body will lie in state at Gardner's Funeral Home, Floyd, until Friday afternoon. A memorial service will be conducted at Holly Hill Baptist Church, Burlington, N.C. at 10 a.m. Friday, November 17, with Pastor Steve Hardy and Rev. Everett Rumley officiating. MOORE, Estelle Ragsdale, 95, of the Roanoke United Methodist Home, died Wednesday, November 15, 1995, at her home. Formerly of Stuart, she was a native of Pittsylvania County. Born March 17, 1900, she was the daughter of the late Fitzhugh Ragsdale and the late Edna Easley Ragsdale. She was the widow of J. Rucker Moore, who died in 1961. She was a former school teacher and librarian, and retired from The Enterprise newspaper in Stuart. She was a member of the Stuart United Methodist Church since 1911. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Beatrice W. Ragsdale of Roanoke; two nieces, Janet Stargell and her husband Tom Stargell of Scottsville and Virginia Stamy and her husband Don Stamy of Howell, Mich.; one special great-niece, Genna Stargell of Scottsville, and a number of other great-nieces and great-nephews living in Michigan. She was also called ``Aunt Stelle"" by her extended family, the Weaver family of Roanoke, Richmond and Atlanta. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Howell Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart, with the Rev. Robert Chapman, chaplain of the Roanoke United Methodist Home, officiating. TREMPER, Floyd Spilman, 86, of Roanoke County, died Wednesday, November 15, 1995, at a Salem Hospital. He was born July 22, 1909 in California, Ky. and served in the United States Army Corps. of Engineers. He had a grocery business in Corbin, Ky. and later in Orlando, Fla. Upon retirement in 1976, he moved to Roanoke County, where he settled on a small farm. He loved working in his garden and observing the wildlife around his home. Surviving are his devoted wife of 61 years, Leona Gieszl Tremper, Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, Col. William F. and Anne Tremper, St. Petersburg, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law, Loretta and Dr. David C. Walton, Roanoke; one brother, Frank Tremper, Lake Havasue, Ariz.; one sister, Leola Withrow, Silver Grove, Ky.; nine grandchildren, Joel McFadden, Carole Ravenscraft, Katie Tremper, Bill Tremper, Jim Walton, Lee Walton, Lynn Irwin, David Walton II, Bentley Walton; eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. YOST, Lois Jamison, 93, of Rocky Mount, died Thursday, November 16, 1995. Born December 13, 1901, in Boones Mill, she was the daughter of the late Owen B. and Augusta Parker Jamison. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Archie Yost of Winston-Salem, N.C. Educated at Radford University, Radford, she taught in the public school system in Winston-Salem, N.C. until her retirement in 1967. She was active in The First Baptist Church, The Veterans of World War I Auxiliary, The Twin City Chapter #60 Order of the Eastern Star, and did volunteer work in the Baptist Hospital. In 1984 she moved to Rocky Mount and continued her volunteer work in the Franklin Memorial Hospital of Rocky Mount. Surviving are nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 18, 1995 at Lynch Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Schneider officiating.
