WYTHEVILLE - Wytheville residents will begin paying $1 per bag for garbage pickup in 1996.
Tags to be attached to 32-gallon bags (maximum weight 50 pounds) will be available in the treasurer's office in the town Municipal Building starting in mid-December for $1 each. Residents also can buy $50 annual decals for reusable trash containers. For smaller bags (up to 13 gallons), 50-cent tags will be available.
The annual decals are numbered and will bear the owner's name and address, so they cannot be peeled off and used elsewhere. People who move within the year must telephone 223-3333 and pay a $2 fee to transfer the decal to the new address.
Trash pickup times will remain the same under the new pay system, started because of rising trash disposal costs.
Residents are encouraged to cut down on the amount of trash by bringing recyclables such as newspapers, plastics, glass and aluminum to the town Recycling Center in the northwest corner of the Wythe Shopping Plaza on Main Street. The center is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays.
New free clinic serves 11 a night
WYTHEVILLE - The new C. Brock Hughes Free Clinic in Wythe and Bland counties averaged 11 patients a night during its first eight nights of operation.
Bill Stout, the clinic's interim executive director, said 87 of the 88 patients through Nov. 8 came from Wythe and the remaining one from Bland. Twice as many women as men have used the clinic, he said.
The services provided during those first eight nights were valued at nearly $13,000.
The clinic was organized by a committee from Helping Overcome Poverty's Existence. HOPE has applied for grants to help fund the clinic and hire a full-time executive director for it.
People from Wythe and Bland counties needing clinic services should apply through their Social Services departments.
