SUPERMARKET CLOSES IN CHRISTIANSBURG

The Harris Teeter grocery store in Christiansburg's Northgate Village Shopping Center closed last month due to lack of business, a company spokewoman said.

"That particular location evidently wasn't convenient enough for enough customers," said Ruth Kinzey, corporate communications manager for the North Carolina-based grocery chain.

She said the store had been "losing money for a long time."

A Harris Teeter store under construction in Blacksburg's Gables Shopping Center is scheduled to open this spring, Kinzey said.

Kinzey said Harris Teeter has tried to carve a position for itself in the highly competitive grocery business by customizing its stores, both in their design and offerings. She would not say what the Blacksburg store will feature.

Harris Teeter operates 139 stores in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. The stores range in size from 15,000 to 65,000 square feet.
