BLACKSBURG FALLS IN PLAYOFFS 24-14

Jeremy Pendergraft threw two touchdown passes to Brandon Johnson as the Lee County Generals stopped Blacksburg 24-14 Saturday in the Group AA Division 4 Region IV football playoffs at Jonesville.

Blacksburg (5-6), behind the running of Tucker LaForce, was even with Generals (7-4) in the second quarter. LaForce had touchdown runs of 6 and 4 yards to offset two touchdowns by Lee.

But the Generals took the lead for good before halftime on a Pendergraft-to-Johnson scoring pass.

Randy Cox added a 28-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to seal the win for Lee, which advances to play Grundy in the next round.

LaForce led the Indians with 12 carries for 81 yards. Dana Wilder paced the Generals on the ground with 118 yards rushing on 24 carries.

Bland County 26, Covington 19: Bland County took advantage of early miscues from the Cougars to win their Group A Region C Division 1 football game in Covington.

The Bears (9-2) scored the first 14 points, taking advantage of great field position given to them by Covington (7-4). The Cougars fumbled the opening kickoff, giving Bland possession on the Covington 31-yard line, leading to a 3-yard touchdown run by Todd Morehead. Covington then went for it on fourth down on its own 46 and didn't pick it up, which led to another Morehead touchdown run of 45 yards.

Covington scored late to make the score 26-19. Covington forced Bland to punt with just over a minute remaining, but was called for roughing the kicker and never regained possession.

Morehead led the Bears with 176 yards on the ground on 24 carries. Tom Luckett was the leading rusher for the Cougars (7-4) with 85 yards on 14 carries.

Fieldale-Collinsville 21, Dan River 12: Kevin Franklin rushed for 113 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Cavaliers past the Wildcats in the first round of the Group AA Region III Division 3 playoffs in Collinsville.

Fieldale-Collinsville, which will meet unbeaten William Campbell in the regional final at 7:30 p.m. Friday, took the early lead on an 11-yard run by Delvin Joyce, but the conversion kick failed.

The Cavaliers (9-2) made it 14-0 in the third quarter when Franklin ran in from 18 yards and Philip Hairston connected with Mancino Craighead on a two-point conversion pass.

Dan River (7-4) rallied with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Philip Loftus to Stephen Guy, but the conversion kick was blocked. The Wildcats cut their deficit to two when Eric Farmer scored on a 27-yard run. Dan River went for two points, but the potential tying conversion pass was incomplete.

Fieldale-Collinsville put away the victory when Franklin scored on a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter and the Cavaliers added the conversion kick.

Lebanon 53, Grayson County 0: Hogoheegee District champion Lebanon ripped Grayson County in the Group A Division 2 Region C football semifinal at Lebanon .

Quarterback Ryan Cowden passed for 140 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 98 yards and two touchdowns for the Pioneers (10-1). Lebanon's leading rusher was Tommy Johnson, who ran for 117 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Cowden's two touchdowns were on runs of 31 yards.

Grayson County rushed for only 123 yards as a team to Lebanon's 355. The Pioneers advance to take on Giles County next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Pearisburg.

Bath County 27, Holston 6: Bath County dominated Holston in a Group A Division 1 Region C game.

The game was played at Alleghany because four inches of snow covered Bath's field. The snow could have helped Holston stop Chargers fullback Ivan Franklin, who ran for 156 yards on 23 carries and scored one touchdown in the 27-6 win.

The Chargers (9-2), the Pioneer District champion, rolled up 404 rushing yards. Their defense allowed only 83 yards on the ground to the Cavaliers (6-5), the runner-up in the Hogoheegee District. The bulk of Holston's ground game came courtesy of Travis Owens, who rushed for 69 yards and one touchdown.

The Chargers advance to face Bland County next week in the regional final.
