UVA-TECH TICKETS ON SALE TUESDAY

The Roanoke Civic Center box office will begin over-the-counter sales for the Virginia Tech-Virginia basketball game on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. All tickets are priced at $18. The game is scheduled for the civic center on Dec.28 at 7 p.m.

In other area news:

Six different players scored for Maryland in its 6-1 victory over James Madison in the NCAA Division I women's soccer tournament at Ludwig Field in College Park, Md.

Maryland (18-5-0) outshot the Dukes (16-8-1) 25-6. Freshman forward Therese Wolden scored her eighth goal of the season for JMU.

Washington and Lee senior Josephine Schaeffer earned All-America honors for the third time in her career by finishing ninth at the NCAA Division III women's cross country championships in West Salem, Wis. Schaeffer finished with a time of 18 minutes, 2 seconds - 37 seconds behind the overall winner, Jessica Caley of Williams College.

In the men's team competition, the Generals finished in last place in a 21-team field. Jason Callen paced the Generals, placing 141st with a time of 26:23. James Marbury of Roanoke College finished 84th in the competition with a time of 25:43, 43 seconds off of All-America status.

The Carter Center Marlins faired well in both sessions of the SWAT Thanksgiving Invitational at Radford University.

In the morning session, Bryan Palmer took first place in the boys' 10-and-under division in the 100-yard individual medley, 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly. Tommy Rappold took first in the boys' 11-12 division in the 50 butterfly and second in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke. Jake Bova took second in the boys' 10-and-under division in the 50 breast stroke. Jamie Truett took first in the girls' 11-12 division in the 100 freestyle and second in the 50 butterfly. Sara Bova took first in the girls' 11-12 division of the 100 backstroke.

In the evening session, Mandy Lippitt won the girls' senior division in the 200 individual medley and took second in the 200 butterfly. Laura Dichtel took first in the girls' 13-14 division in the 100 backstroke and the 500 freestyle, and Blair Huffman finished third in the girls' 13-14 division in the 200 individual medley and third in the 100 breast stroke. Steve Cromer won the boys' senior division in the 200 individual medley. Harry Kessler finished third in the boys' 13-14 division in the 200 individual medley. The boys' 13-14 group won its division in the 200 relay in a time of 1:42.42.

Virginia begins defense of the NCAA Division I men's soccer championship today when it meets Rhode Island at 2 p.m. at Klockner Stadium.

The Rams (19-1-2) won the Atlantic-10 championship and have the second-best record of any team in the NCAA field.

The Cavaliers (18-0-2) won their fifth consecutive ACC championship last Sunday and are bidding for their fifth straight NCAA championship.

UVa coach Bruce Arena said the Rams' credentials are impressive enough to merit a seeding in the middle of the NCAA field, ``but I guess there wasn't enough time for the committee to look at everything,'' he said Sunday.

Andrew Williams, a freshman from Kingston, Jamaica, had 18 goals and 19 assists to lead the Rams in scoring.

Virginia's leading scorer is junior forward Mike Fisher with 16 goals and eight assists.
