BOTETOURT ACCIDENT INJURES 6

A three-vehicle accident on U.S. 220 in northern Botetourt County sent six people to hospitals Sunday afternoon, two of them with life-threatening injuries, state police said.

About 4:35 p.m. Sunday, a car traveling south on U.S. 220 about one-third mile south of Virginia 722 veered into the northbound lane, according to Trooper G.K. Straub. The car struck the rear left quarterpanel of another car, sending that car into a spin. The southbound car then struck a northbound sport-utility vehicle head-on.

The driver of the southbound car, Patricia Ann Weidman, 48, of Eagle Rock, was flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition late Sunday.

Leonard Barrow, 58, of Roanoke was driving the first car Weidman hit. He was taken by ambulance to Alleghany Regional Hospital with minor injuries.

Keith Wilson, 41, of Jacksonville, Fla., was driving the third vehicle. He; his wife, Evelene Wilson, 35; and their 13-year-old son were taken to Roanoke Memorial with minor injuries.

The couple's 8-year-old daughter, who was sitting behind her father, suffered an open-skull fracture and was flown to Roanoke Memorial, Straub said. She was listed in critical condition late Sunday.

The accident snarled traffic on U.S. 220 for about 21/2 hours, he said.
