MAROONS WEAR CROWN

Page Moir said last week he liked his team, except that the small forward spot concerned him. The Roanoke College men's basketball coach shouldn't worry anymore.

The Maroons got 28 points out of their small forwards, Kevin Sigafoes and Derek Bryant, and went on to rout Oglethorpe 93-67 on Sunday for the championship of the Salem Bank & Trust Tip Off Tournament at the Bast Center.

Sigafoes scored eight of Roanoke's first 12 points and his backup, Bryant, added eight of the next 10 as the Maroons built an early 22-13 lead. By halftime, they led 54-34.

``Kevin was the key factor in the first half,'' Moir said. ``Every one of Derek's shots was a good shot. If he keeps doing that, he'll make more than 40 percent of his 3-pointers this year.''

Roanoke (2-0) led by as many as 33 points twice in the second half. Four Maroons scored double figures on the 1994-95 NCAA participant Petrels, led by Bryant's 18 points. No Roanoke player played more than 22 minutes for the second day in a row. ``They were very impressive,'' said Oglethorpe coach Jack Berkshire.

Elizabethtown (Pa.) College won the consolation game 80-76 over Ferrum. The Panthers are 0-2 for the first time in coach Bill Pullen's 16 years at the school.

``There was a lot of confusion,'' Pullen said. ``We won two scrimmages last week, but we've been going downhill ever since. We're all the way back to starting over.''

Ferrum led 28-14 with 8:20 to go in the first half, but by the intermission, the Blue Jays trailed by just 34-32. Elizabethtown held off a late Ferrum push thanks mainly to guard Andy Burkholder's 6-for-8 shooting on 3-pointers.

Marcus Toney pulled Ferrum within 74-70 with a layup with 1:42 to go, but the Panthers then had to start fouling to regain possession. The Panthers committed 30 fouls in the game.

Burkholder led the Blue Jays with 22 points. Alleghany High School graduate Michael Hunter led the Panthers with 28 points and Tony Meredith had 20.

Hunter and Burkholder made the all-tournament team, along with Oglethorpe's Ryan Vickers and Byron Letourneau. Three Maroons were also selected: Courtney Fitch, Tim Braun and tournament MVP Jon Maher.
