In Charlottesville, four-time defending NCAA soccer champion Virginia held off Rhode Island 2-1 in a first-round NCAA Tournament match.

Pernell Whitaker knocked out Jake Rodriguez in the sixth round of their WBC 147-pound title fight in Atlantic City, N.J., on Saturday. In the first fight of the championship doubleheader, Felix Trinidad defended the IBF welterweight title by stopping Larry Barnes at 2:54 of the fourth round.
