WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP

"Anyone who wants to volunteer, just come on in anytime," said Joyce Hendricks, a member of the executive committee for the Montgomery County Christmas Store.

Money is the most needed item. Thrifty bargain hunters working for the store claim they can turn every dollar into $2.50.

The store has not quite reached the halfway point to meet its holiday budget.

Children's coats are greatly needed. In the canned-food department, the store is low on fruits.

Donations, such as a box of handmade dolls, have come in from as far away as Iowa. The generous doll maker was inspired by an article about the store five years ago in "Family Circle." It is one of only two such stores in the country, according to Hendricks.

Whether you donate time or goods, Hendricks said, anyone who is a part of the Christmas Store "comes away feeling so good about Montgomery County."

Tax-deductible donations can be sent to:

Montgomery County Christmas Store, P.O. Box 221, Blacksburg, Va. 24063.
