Skater died of heart attack

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - Olympic figure skating champion Sergei Grinkov died of a heart attack brought on by severe heart disease, an autopsy found Tuesday.

There was no evidence of drug or alcohol abuse by the 28-year-old athlete, said Dr. Francis Varga, who performed the autopsy at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

Grinkov, a two-time gold medal winner, collapsed and died Monday while practicing with his partner and wife, Ekaterina Gordeeva.

Varga said Grinkov had suffered an earlier heart attack within 24 hours of his death but apparently had not complained of pain. The autopsy showed that a coronary artery that feeds a major portion of the heart muscle was virtually closed and the heart was enlarged from high blood pressure.

Studies: Sugar won't make kids hyper

CHICAGO - Sugar consumption does not significantly affect the way most children act or think, researchers concluded after reviewing 23 studies involving more than 500 youngsters.

The researchers said in Wednesday's Journal of The American Medical Association that the excitement at parties when a lot of sugar is consumed may be mistaken for a sugar reaction.

Hearing-aid maker to pay $2.75 million

WASHINGTON - The company that makes the ``miracle ear clarifier'' agreed Tuesday to pay a record $2.75 million to settle allegations it continued advertising unsupported claims for the hearing aids after being ordered to stop.

The Justice Department said Dahlberg Inc., a subsidiary of Bausch & Lomb, agreed to pay the civil penalty to settle allegations that it violated the Federal Trade Commission Act by using deceptive advertising for the hearing aids from 1988 to 1993. About 40,000 people, many of them elderly, bought clarifiers.
