NEW LOOKS FOR 'THE CITY' AND 'ANOTHER WORLD'

Daytime soap viewers are being treated to a new look on two shows, ``Another World'' and ``The City'' (the last episode of ``Loving'' aired Nov. 10, and the first episode of ``The City'' aired on Nov. 13).

``The City'' will feature a lot of exterior shots of New York City and the loft building where nearly everyone on the soap will reside or work. There will be new interior sets for the show, too, which will afford better camera techniques and a more polished look. The real building used for ``The City'' is located on Greene Street in the Soho district of New York City, while the interiors were built in the ABC studios. When viewers are given the chance to see shots from the window, they will get a realistic feeling since the backdrops have been digitally painted to make it appear that you are really looking at New York City.

The Soho building will house the modeling agency of Tess Wilder (Catherine Hickland), the City Bar, the new club owned by Jacob Foster (by Darnell Williams) and Buck Huston (played by Philip Brown), and the Soho Free Clinic, where Angie Hubbard (Debbi Morgan) will practice medicine.

Along with the already announced Morgan Fairchild in the role of the wealthy Sydney Chase, other new cast members on ``The City'' include Geoffrey Wade as attorney Malcolm Christopher, Roscoe Born as Nick Rivers, Joni Allen as Zoey, Philip Anthony as Bernardo Castro, Melissa Dye as Molly Mallone and Carlotta Chang as Azure C.

Former ``Loving'' cast members Nancy Addison, who played Deborah Brewster, and Michael Weatherly, who played Cooper Alden, will make guest appearances on ``The City'' on Dec. 19. Making a guest appearance on Nov. 30, will be Philip Anthony.

Meanwhile, ``Another World'' debuted its new indoor city on Nov. 17. The set consists of three permanent buildings - a new hospital, a two-story police station and Carlino's Restaurant. Each of the three buildings has permanent and interchangeable sets. There is also a street intersection - Center Street and 8th Avenue - which is large enough for an ambulance to drive up to the emergency room doors of the Bay City hospital.

The new sets were designed and constructed by ``Another World'' set designer Bobby Berg. ``AW'' executive producer Jill Farren Phelps also persuaded ``Guiding Light'' executive producer Michael Laibson to lend ``GL'' set designer Rick Dennis to the project to assist Berg.

The new ``AW'' set was built in an 11,000-square-foot studio, and took 8,000 man hours and 50 days to construct. The new facility allows for AW to shoot scenes in the round, through 360 degrees, and from the inside as well as the outside of the sets. There are new Sony chip cameras (three pedestals with hard cams plus two new minicams), and the need to run camera cables through the sets has been eliminated because ``patch panels'' where cameras can be hooked up, are hidden in the scenery. The show is also being digitally recorded, edited and broadcast.

At a press conference, Farren Phelps revealed that Jake McKinnon (Tom Eplin) will soon start a newspaper (no name had been decided on at press time), which Matt Cory (Matt Crane) will also be involved in. Farren Phelps noted there will be some new characters added to the show, too.
