IN SERVICE

Army National Guard Pfc. Ryan Johnson recently completed training at U.S. Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, Columbus, S.C.

Johnson is a 1992 graduate of Auburn High School in Riner. He is the son of Eric Johnson of Christiansburg and Sharon Morley of Pilot.

Marine Lance Cpl. Daniel Ratcliffe has been promoted to his present rank while serving with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Training Squadron 253, Marine Aircraft Group 14, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point, N.C.

Ratcliffe is a 1993 graduate of Giles High School. He is the son of Bentley Ratcliffe of Pearisburg and Marcie Bishop of Blacksburg.

Several area residents recently completed 11 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. They are:

Marine Pvt. Sonny Bishop, a 1995 graduate of Auburn High School and the son of Billy Bishop and Jeannie Lytton of Christiansburg.

Marine Pvt. Woodroe Bowman is the son of James Bowman of Radford.

Marine Pvt. Johnnie Crouser, a 1995 graduate of Christiansburg High School, is the son of Robert and Nancy Miles of Christiansburg.

Marine Pfc. David Flanagan, son of David Flanagan Sr. of Dublin, was promoted to his present rank upon completion of the training. A 1995 graduate of Pulaski County High School, he joined the Marine Corps in July 1994.

Marine Pvt. Bradley Sexton, a 1995 graduate of Pulaski County High School, is the son of Charles and Elizabeth Sexton of Radford.

Marine Pfc. Kenneth Whitesell, a 1995 graduate of Pulaski County High School, is the son of James and Robin Whitesell of Dublin.

Marine Pvt. David Workman, a 1995 graduate of Shawsville High School, is the son of William and Sherry Manspile of Elliston.

Blacksburg resident Marine Pfc. William Heller and Marine Pfc. David Gott have reported for duty with Inspector and Instructor Staff, 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, 4th Marine Division in Lynchburg.

Navy Airman Apprentice Robert Hager recently graduated from Aviation Anti-Submarine Warfare Operator School at the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Millington, Tenn.

Hager joined the Navy in January 1995. He graduated from Pulaski County High School in 1993.

A Blacksburg resident has been awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for service during Operation Restore Hope in Somalia.

Navy Lt. Michael Barnes received the award that recognizes service members who have actively participated in Operation Restore Hope after Dec. 5, 1992.

Barnes graduated from Blacksburg High School in 1987 and received his bachelor's degree in 1991 from Old Dominion University. He is the son of Michael Barnes.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Ronnie Poff recently received the Navy Achievement Medal while assigned with Reserve Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 23, Army Engineering Center, Fort Belvoir, Va. Poff is the son of Albert Poff Jr. of Draper.

Brian Phillips recently joined the U.S. Army under the Delayed Enlistment Program at the U.S. Army Recruiting Station in Roanoke. The program allows individuals to delay enlistment into the Army for up to one year before reporting to basic military training.

Phillips is a 1989 graduate of Auburn High School. He will report for military basic training in February.

He is the son of Johnny and Barbara Phillips of Christiansburg.

Navy Seaman recruit Thomas Kington recently completed eight weeks of U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

A 1995 graduate of Christiansburg High School, Kington is the son of Thomas and Maria Kington of Christiansburg.
