SALVATION ARMY STARTS FUND-RAISING CAMPAIGN

The Salvation Army will kick off its bell-ringer campaign at 9 a.m. today in Pulaski County at the entrance to Wal-Mart in the Memorial Square Shopping Center.

Volunteers man the bell-ringing stations there and elsewhere from after Thanksgiving until close to Christmas to raise money for the organization's many projects. Those include providing food, shelter and clothing to the needy.

The Salvation Army dates back to 1865 when a former Methodist minister, William Booth, began holding religious meetings in London's east end slums. He organized the Christian Mission, which in 1878 changed its name to the Salvation Army complete with uniforms for its men and women.

Now, the organization operates in some 90 countries, including the United States where it was established in 1880. It has more than 9,000 centers like the one in Pulaski.
