Food for fines

RADFORD - The Radford Public Library will accept canned and nonperishable food items in lieu of fines for overdue books returned Monday, Nov. 27, through Friday, Dec. 29. Food will distributed to those in need by the Radford Social Services Department.

Committee candidates

CHRISTIANSBURG - County and community committees to administer Farm Service Agency programs in Montgomery County will be elected in December.

Jim Arrington, Tom Lavery, S. Allen Sisson and Joan Wolf are candidates for the Alleghany area. R. Randolph Altizer, Kyle Bishop, Bernard Cox and Rose Mary Phillips are candidates for the Auburn area. Martha McDonald, Woodie Mitchell, Charles Shorter and Richard Wall are candidates for the Blacksburg area..

Ballots must be in the county office by Monday, Dec. 4.

Tree lighting

PULASKI - The Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley will host its annual "Lighting of the Trees" ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m., at the Fine Arts Center Annex, 44 Fourth St., Pulaski.

Holiday food package

CHRISTIANSBURG - SHARE Virginia will offer a special holiday food package. Packages of $30 worth of fresh fruits, vegetables, staple items and frozen meats cost $14 in cash or food stamps and 2 hours of volunteer time.

SHARE, a program of New River Community Action, is open to anyone who wishes to participate. Call SHARE at 982-2074.

Donations needed

BLACKSBURG - The YMCA Thrift Shop welcomes donations of good used clothing, household items, paperback books, toys, sports equipment, and furniture.

Donations will be taken at the Thrift shop, 1336 S. Main St., Blacksburg through Saturday, Dec. 16. The store will be closed from Dec. 17 through Jan. 1.

Membership drive

CHRISTIANSBURG - Montgomery County Friends of the Library is seeking new members.

Friends of the Library is a nonprofit organization that helps the library and community by providing programs, services and library materials not covered by public funds.

Application forms are available at the Christiansburg and Blacksburg libraries and at the Montgomery County bookmobiles.

WinterFest 95

BLACKSBURG - WinterFest 95 will be held in The Jacksonville Center in Floyd on Friday, Dec. 9, and Saturday, Dec. 10, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The festival will continue on Sunday, Dec. 11, from noon to 5:30 p.m. Crafts, hot cider, roasted chestnuts, Christmas trees and wreaths will be offered at the festival.
