ATKINS, Katie Campbell, 92, of Roanoke, died November 23, 1995. She was a member of the Seventeenth Street Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank E. Atkins; a son, James E. Atkins; sons-in-law, Charles McVey and Claude Eugene Gross. She is survived by a son and daught er-in-law, Roy and Joyce Atkins; daughters, Christella McVey, Annie Gross, all of Roanoke; sister and brother-in-law, Nannie and Ray Lilly, Ocala, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Rosemary Atkins; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at noon, Monday, November 27, 1995, at the Lotz Vinton Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Robert W. Lanier, with interment in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. BAILEY, Shirley Ann Patterson, 58, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, November 21, 1995. She retired from the Roanoke City Public Schools, where she worked as a teacher's aide. She was preceded in death by a son, Stanley Baile y, and a nephew, Raymond Patterson Jr. Survivors include two sons, Keith Bailey and Michael Patterson, both of Roanoke; one sister, Sandra Patterson Dixon, New Haven, Conn.; two brothers, James E. Patterson and Raymond W. Patterson Sr.; two grandchildren, Keisha Bailey and Michael N. Patterson; one sister-in-law, Lorice Patterson, all of Roanoke; aunts, uncles, nieces, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Monday, at 11 a.m. at the Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Joseph Mayo will officiate with the interment in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will assemble at the Community Center at Lincoln Terrace Monday before and after the service.

BECKNER, Nannie Mae Parker, 81, of Roanoke, died Thursday, November 23, 1995. Survivors include her daughters, Marie Markham, Roanoke, Frankie Maxwell and Randolph, of Dublin, Chris Hartman and Tony, Roanoke, Liz Snead, Roanoke, Jane Hunley and Jimmy, Hardy, Vickie Riley and Steve, South Carolina; also surviving are several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. BYRD, Walter Paul, 85, of Marion, died Thursday, November 23, 1995 in the Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie. He was a member of the Riverside Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his wife, Willie Mae Pennington Byrd. Mr. Byrd was employed by Joe's Market and by Fred's Market on Chatham Hill Road for many years. He is survived by two sons; Walter L. Byrd, Marion, Warren P. By rd, Marion; three sisters, Mrs. Bonnie Denny, Chilhowie, Mrs. Mae Smith, Richmond, Mrs. Kate Graeme, Fernley, Nev.; one grandson, Joseph Alan Byrd, Marion. DONALD, Rachel Catherine, (``Granny""), 85, of Roanoke, went to be with her Lord early Thanksgiving morning, November 23, 1995, after a long stay at Richfield Nursing Center. ``Granny"" was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Dawlson E. Donald, her mother and step-father, Sarah and Harry Cash, of Buena Vista, her father, John Campbell, five brothers, a sister, and a daughter, Ruth Eva. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Donald Beckner and Joseph ``Jack"" Beckner of Roanoke; her son and daughter-in-law, Bob D. Donald and Mary Elliott Donald, Houston, Texas. She was known affectionately as ``Granny"" by her six grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at New Life Temple on Airport Road where ``Granny"" was a faithful member for many years. Services will begin at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 27, 1995, with the Rev. Walter Lee Wood officiating. Interment will follow at the Blue Ridge Memorial Garden beside the church. EMORE, Russell Everett, 68, of Lexington, died Thursday, November 23, 1995 in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born August 28, 1927 in Rockbridge Co. He was the son of the late George Thomas Emore and Ethel Pooley Emore. He was a member of the Lauderdale A R Presbyterian Church and a life member of the Lexington Lifesaving & First Aid Crew. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Herb, Pete, & Tom Emore and two sisters, Dot Emore and Patsy Martin. He is survived by his wife, Mary Clemmer Emore, Lexington; daughter, Bonnie Emore Tomlinson, Lexington; daughter & son-in-law, Mary Jane Mutispaugh & John Stanley Mutispaugh, Lexington; one brother, Harry R. Emore, Lexington; three sisters, Ruby E. Blackwell, Lexington, Louise E. Chaplin, Glasgow, Gladys E. Wade, Lexington; mother-in-law, Mary T. Tardy, Lexington; three granddaughters, Heather C. HICKOK, Henry Hammond, 81, of Buchanan, died Friday, November 24, 1995. He was preceded in death by 42 days by his wife, Annie Caldwell Hickok, and they are now reunited. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific, and had retired from Lone Star Cement Company with 31 years service. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph Madison and Brenda N. Hickok, Roanoke, Henry David and Faye B. Hickok, Tim D. Hickok, Deanna Smith, all of Buchanan; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Lillian Hickok, Buchanan; sisters and brother-in-law, Lena H. Johnston, Lois and Guy Snidow, all of Buchanan; five grandchildren, Kenneth, Angela, Kathy, William and Julie; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. HYLTON, Edith Mae Nichols, 70, of Route 4, Stuart, died Thursday night, November 23, 1995, at Community Hospital in Roanoke. Mrs. Hylton was preceded in death by a daughter, Dora Lynn Hilton. She is survived by her husband, Leonard Hylton of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Kregg (Donna) Roberson, Stuart; two sons, Wayne L. (Debra) Hylton, Collinsville, and Timmie M. KING, Lelia Ruff, 73, of Thaxton, passed away Friday, November 24, 1995 in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She was born January 22, 1922 in Bedford County , a daughter of the late Walter Ruff and Pearl Ruff Ruff. She was a retired employee of Fred Whittaker Co., and was a member of the Thaxton Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, William C. King Sr.; three daughters, Myrtle R. Reeder, Lettie R. Minnick, both of Christiansburg, Dorothy R. Gordon, Bedford; eight sons, Garland E. Ruff, Fairfield, Ohio, William O. Ruff, Jacksonville, Fla., Roger W. Ruff, Danny L. Ruff, Glen W. LITTLEPAGE, Margaret Hicks, 81, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, November 23, 1995. Mrs. Littlepage was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church, was a musician and artist. She was the widow of William Franklin Littlepage and is survived by her daughter, Julie L. Sample, Roanoke; her grandson, Brian Sample and his wife, Angela, Salem; her great-grandson, Travis S ample; a sister, Mildred Bodkin, Covington; also several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's North Chapel Saturday, November 25, 1995, 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Emory N. Tarpley Sr. officiating. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. SIMPSON, Ruth Alaska, 88, of Radford, passed away Friday, November 24, 1995 at Radford Community Hospital. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, and was a retired school teacher, having taught for over 35 years in the Pulaski County School System. Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, William B. and Jo Simpson, Radford; several nieces and nephews. SNEAD, Mae Reynolds, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, November 23, 1995 after a short illness. She was the daughter of the late Marvin Curtis Reynolds and Julie Anne Landsberg, formerly of Hinsdale, Ill. and Walnut Grove Farm, Shawsville. Mrs. Snead graduated from Beaver College in Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education and for several years taught in the school system. She is a former member of the Roanoke Junior League, the Salem Junior Guild and the Lake Spring Garden Club. One of her current activities included her weekly volunteer work at the American Red Cross. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Colston Snead, Jr., and a son, Samuel Curtis Snead. Besides her daughter, Susan Snead Light and her son-in-law, Richard Chinnis Light, she leaves two grandsons, Richard Colston Light and Samuel Scott Light. In addition to her sister, Bettie Trout Samuel and brother-in-law, John Spoar Samuel, she is survived by several cousins, nephews and nieces, including Anne Reynolds Trout, Lenora Trout Bowman and Nancy Trout Chason. A memorial service will be held at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, 10:30 a.m., November 27, 1995 by the Rev. Tupper Garden, Pastor the Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church. The burial service will follow at the White Cemetery in Shawsville. THOMAS, John Benedict, (``Ippy""), 58,of Roanoke, died Friday, November 24, 1995. Ippy was a prominent restauranteur, having been previous owner and operator of Ippy's Restaurant, formerly located in Roanoke and currently in Rocky Mount, Va., a charter member of the Roanoke Snow Mobile Club, and a member of St. Elias Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his father, T. M. (Uncle Tom) Thomas. Surviving are his wife, Sheila D. Thomas; one daughter and son-in-law, JoDee and Robert Jeans, Rocky Mount; one son, Thomas Michael Thomas, Roanoke; one grandson, John Berger Jeans; his mother, Josephine A. Thomas, Roanoke.
