MOORE'S NAMES MERCHANDISING MANAGER

JIM O'BRIEN has been named senior merchandising manager for millwork/hardlines at Moore's Lumber and Building Supplies in Roanoke. O'Brien has been with Moore's since 1994 as zone manager for seven locations in Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland. Prior to that, he was director of marketing and merchandising at Builderway Inc. in Greenville, S.C.

Also at Moore's, ZACH STRAITS has been promoted to zone manager. He has been with Moore's since 1979, most recently as a branch manager in Petersburg.

ACCOUNTING

CYNDY WILSON MUSCATELLO has joined McLeod & Co., a Roanoke certified public accounting firm. A graduate of Virginia Tech's accountancy program, she will focus on specialized tax planning services.

BANKING

B.H. RAKESTRAW III has been named manager of Salem Bank and Trust's Hollins office. He began his banking career with First National Exchange Bank, a predecessor of First Union National Bank of Virginia, and also worked for Crestar Bank before joining Salem Bank and Trust.

BEAUTY CARE

DEBORAH GUTHRIE is the new owner and manager of Edward Grant Salon in Roanoke. Guthrie has been involved with the operation of Edward Grant for 14 years.

COLLEGES

ROGER DALTON has been named director of community outreach at National Business College. He was executive director for the Williamson Road Area Business Association from 1993 to 1995. Before that, he was area director of United Service Organizations Inc. for Southern Europe.

ENGINEERS

JEANNE H. PEDIGO of Roanoke, director of business planning for Chantilly-based Campbell and Paris Engineers, has been inducted into the the Professional Hall of Fame at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn., for her work in aeronautical research and in aviation management. Pedigo is an aeronautical engineer who was involved in early aerospace research and is the only woman to chair the Virginia Aviation Board.

ENVIRONMENT

C. BRIAN KIDD has been promoted to vice president, laboratory services for EnviroTech Mid-Atlantic Laboratories, which is located in Blacksburg at the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center. In his new position, he will oversee management of technical and administrative personnel and the development and implementation of growth strategies.

GOVERNMENT

WILLIS M. "WICK" ANDERSON has been re-elected chairman of the board of commissioners of the Roanoke Redevelopment and Housing Authority for 1995-1996. He was appointed to the board in 1992 and elected chairman in 1993. JAMES W. BURKS JR., who is employed by Norfolk Southern Corp., was re-elected vice chairman. Other board members are RONALD O. CRAWFORD, Sherertz Franklin Crawford Shaffner Inc.; ROBERT W. GLENN, Issues Management Group Jr.; THADDEUS H. HALE JR., Yokohama Tire Corp.; CAROLYN JOHNSON, JAMES O. Botetourt County Supervisor WENDY WINGO has been elected second vice president of the Virginia Association of Counties. Wingo represents the counties of Bedford, Botetourt, Craig, Giles and Roanoke on the VACO board and is on the education steering committee. She is a math and science teacher at Woodrow Middle School in Roanoke.

HEALTH CARE

CYNTHIA J. READ has been appointed executive director of Employee Assistance of Central Virginia, a private nonprofit consortium serving more than 60 employers. Read has been with EACV for six years, most recently as acting director for the last seven months. She previously held other positions at the consortium, including assistant director and managed care coordinator.

RUSSELL RICH has joined Virginia Prosthetics as a certified prosthetist and orthotist. Rich comes to the company from Advanced Orthopedic Technology in Huntington, W.Va. Virginia Prosthetics, a provider of artificial limbs and braces, has offices in Roanoke, Martinsville and Fishersville.

HOSPITALITY

SHARON ROWE, who works at The Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., has been named to the advisory board of Historic Hotels of America, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation based in Washington, D.C.

INSURANCE

GERRY SPENCER of Roanoke, has been appointed regional director of the NOL Division of PFL Life Insurance Co., which is a part of Baltimore-based Aegon Insurance Group, U.S.A. Spencer will be responsible for marketing life and annuity products in agencies in the Mid-Atlantic states. He has 19 years of experience in the life insurance business.

RICHARD "D.J." WHITE has been appointed branch sales manager at Erie Insurance Group's Roanoke office. White comes from Raleigh, N.C., where he was a district sales manager. In his new position, he will manage sales and marketing operations, district sales managers and customer representatives for areas in Virginia and Tennessee.

LAW

ROBERT S. BERSCH of the Roanoke law firm Bersch & Rhodes has joined the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys Inc., a professional association of lawyers concerned with improving the availability and delivery of legal services to elderly clients. The academy was formed in 1987 and has members in all 50 states.

Six lawyers from the Roanoke area have been elected officers of Virginia State Bar sections for 1995-96: MICHAEL JAMES QUINAN, Woods, Rogers and Hazlegrove, vice chairman of the administrative law section; ANTHONY FRANKLIN ANDERSON, secretary of the criminal law section; THOMAS DANIEL FRITH III, Mundy, Rogers & Frith, chairman of the litigation section; E. Industrial Systems & Service, chairman of the corporate counsel section.

MANUFACTURING

JOHN BASSETT III, chief executive officer of Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Co. in Galax, has been elected first vice president of the American Furniture Manufacturers Association. Newly elected board members of the association include DENNIS AMMONS of Singer Furniture Co., ROB SPILMAN of Bassett Furniture Industries, and SCOTT TYLER of The Lane Co.
