NEW LIBRARY ON SCHEDULE

The move this spring of the Library of Virginia to a new building remains on schedule, construction officials said.

Ground was broken for the 500,000-square-foot building in September 1993 with occupancy scheduled to begin in May. The full relocation of the library's holdings should be completed by the end of September.

The six-story library will be the new home of such documents as one of the 12 remaining copies of the Bill of Rights and the papers and public records of Virginia's governors from 1776 to the present.

The relocation will provide a challenge for the special handling of rare books and collections, archival records, manuscripts and other library holdings.

The move also will mean the relocation of the state library's fully networked computer system, which supports library programs statewide and is tied into educational systems around Virginia.
