FULLER-LED WOLFPACK SHREDS VMI

Todd Fuller posted career highs with 31 points and 21 rebounds Saturday night as North Carolina State opened its season with a 104-78 victory over VMI in Raleigh, N.C.

The 6-foot-11 Fuller, who was dominating inside, scored 20 of N.C. State's first 37 points.

Fuller became the first Wolfpack player since Tiny Pinder grabbed 21 rebounds against Detroit in the 1977-78 season to top the 20-rebound mark.

N.C. State didn't miss guards Ishua Benjamin and C.C. Harrison, both suspended for academic reasons. Freshman Ivan Wagner more than picked up the slack, scoring 10 points in the final 3:16 of the first half as the Wolfpack took a 52-37 intermission lead.

Wagner finished with 29 points - tying Benjamin's opening-game freshman scoring mark set last season - in only 24 minutes, making 9 of 13 field-goal attempts, including 6-for-9 from 3-point range.

Fuller, a preseason all-Atlantic Coast Conference selection, scored eight points in a 15-2 run by the Wolfpack to start the game, then had 11 straight in the latter part of the first 20 minutes.

The Keydets, who lost for the seventh straight time to the Wolfpack, pulled to 30-24 with 6:49 left before intermission on a pass by Maurice Spencer that ended up banking in for a 3-pointer.

But Fuller added a three-point play and four straight free throws to push the Wolfpack margin back to 13.

The Keydets, with four starters returning, tried a zone in the second half to try to slow down Fuller's inside game, but he reeled off nine straight points in less than three minutes to help close out VMI.

Lawrence Gullette had 20 points for the Keydets.

Ohio 90, Old Dominion 89, 2OT: Damion Washington's 3-pointer with a minute left in the second overtime finally broke a refuse-to-die Old Dominion team to give Ohio fifth place in the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage, Alaska.

Joe Bunn had 25 points for the Monarchs (1-2), including 10 in the overtime periods, but Old Dominion sputtered at the end after coming back from 19 down.

A Mark Poag 3-pointer brought Old Dominion even with Ohio as regulation ran out, and the first overtime ended 81-all after Bunn hit two free throws.

The second overtime saw four lead changes before Washington's 3-pointer put Ohio (2-1) up by four, 90-86. Bunn then missed two free-throw attempts but grabbed the rebound, scored on a layup, then sank a free throw to make it 90-89.

Old Dominion got one more chance with five seconds left, but a Mike Byers jumper bounced off the rim.

John Carroll 90, W&L 61: Jeffrey Sesplankis scored 15 points to lead John Carroll, Ohio, (2-1) past Washington and Lee (0-4) in the opening round of the Carnegie Mellon Invitational in Pittsburgh.

Washington and Lee was led by Chris Couzen, who scored 13 points.
