RALPH NADER JOINS THE RACE

After all the speculation about Colin Powell, Ross Perot and Jesse Jackson running as independent presidential candidates, California has emerged with a new third-party candidate: consumer crusader Ralph Nader.

Nader said in a statement Monday that he will be a candidate in California's Green Party's presidential primary March 26. He said he had been urged to run by a coalition of people, including labor and environmentalists.

Barbara Blong, a former Green Party senatorial candidate, said Nader's candidacy will ``spur grass-roots organizing efforts across the country. With half the electorate not voting and many voters reluctantly opting for the lesser of two evils, Nader and the Greens have the right message at the right time.''
