BECK, Nellie Smith, 96, of Blacksburg, formerly of San Luis Obispo, CA., died Thursday, November 23, 1995 in Montgomery Regional Hospital. Born in Castle Rock, Colorado on October 25, 1899, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Nellie Sellars Smith. Mrs. Beck was reared and educated in Colorado, receiving a B.A. degree from Colorado State University in Fort Coflins, Colorado. She married Carl G. Beck on August 15, 1922 in Denver, Colorado. She and Carl moved to San Luis Obispo in 1932 when he received employment at Cal PolyUniversity. Mrs. Beck was a homemaker most of her life and enjoyed world wide travel, raising her family and entertaining family and friends. She was a member of the St. Stephans Episcopal Church, the Cal Poly Womens Faculty Club in San Luis Obispo, Chapter 49 of the Order of Eastern Star, Del Norte, CO., a member of Phi Epsilon Chapter of Kappa Delta and the Virginia Tech Faculty Moms in Blacksburg, Virginia. Mrs. Beck was preceded in death by her husband, Carl G. Beck in 1975, and a daughter, Jacqueline B. Schafer in 1994. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Carol B. and Thomas N. Meacham, Blacksburg; her grandchildren, Tom and Irene Schafer, Westfield, N.J., Mary Birmingham, Cottonwood, CA., Susan Meacham, Rock Hill, S. C. and Vernon and Nancy Meacham, Chesapeake, Va.; and also seven great-grandchildren, Heather and Dawn Schafer, Chrissy Schafer, Aaron and Kimberly Darton, Dillon and Duncan Meacham. She was born on May 31, 1898 in Rockbridge County, the daughter of the late Thomas Nelson and Melinda Greenlee Beal. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lexington. She is survived by one daughter, Lodell Spencer, Lexington; two sons, James Crawford Mackey, Lexington, and Floyd Teaford Mackey, Baltimore, Md.; one sister Lennie B. Washington; 19 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Mr. Vaught was employed for many years by American Bridge of United Steel Corporation. He was co-honor of Nu-Tread Tire Service Inc. in Vinton until his retirement in 1981. WRIGHT, James Lewis, 83, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, November 26, 1995, in a local hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Wright; and his parents, Fannie and James Wright. He was an Army veteran of World War II and retired from the Army as a Major. He was also the retired owner of Gillette Neon Signs in Hollywood, Fla. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Robert Hotchkiss, Atlanta, Ga., Susan Wright and Brent Cochran, Boone, N.C.; sister, Marie W. Killgore, Roanoke. Memorial services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel at 11 a.m. Tuesday with Dr. Harry Y. Gamble officiating. Interment will be private.
YOUNG, Virginia Kiser, 93, of Volney, passed away Sunday, November 26, 1995 at her home. She was the widow of Bill Young. She was born Marcy 25,1902 at Flatridge, Va. to Michael Kiser and Clementine Pugh Kiser. She is survived by two daughters, JoyScott, Sugar Grove, Gay Young, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Gerri Young, Troutville; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchild ren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in the Reins-Sturdivant Chapel, with the Rev. Gene Webb, the Rev. Phillip Duvall and Gay Young officiating. Interment in Grant Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday night from 7 to 9 p.m. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Independence, Va., is in charge of arrangements.
