BARBER EARNS HIGH MARKS AND ANOTHER HONOR

Virginia running back Tiki Barber was named to the Hitachi/College Football Association Scholar-Athlete Team Scholar-Athlete Team announced Wednesday.

The team is comprised of 24 football players who have cumulative grade-point averages between 3.0 and 4.0, who have completed 50 percent of their degree requirements and who are starters or meaningful reserves.

Barber, a junior from Roanoke majoring in commerce, made the team by earning a 3.4 grade-point average. He was named first-team All-ACC as a running back after rushing for a school-record 1,397 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Hitachi, Ltd., will donate $1,000 to each high school attended by the honorees. Barber attended Cave Spring High School.

In other sports in the region:

John Poindexter was named Ferrum's offensive player of the year, and Kareem Woods was tabbed defensive player of the year during the Panthers' fall banquet Wednesday night.

Senior David Waddell received the Big Green Award, which is given in memory of former Ferrum players and coach Rick Tolley who died in the 1970 Marshall University plane crash.

In other fall sports awards, Kia Williams was named most valuable player in volleyball, Kindal Newman of Salem was named most improved player, Julie Shifflett earned the Lady Panther Volleyball Award for Pride, Spirit and Dedication and manager Derek Baird was given the Award of Appreciation.

In men's soccer, Michael Carey was named most valuable player, Emerson Umana earned offensive player of the year and Coach's Awards, and Sal Fiorenza was named the defensive player of the year.

In women's soccer, Shannon Sayre and Hilary Wager were co-most valuable players, Sayre was named the defensive player of the year, Susan Sautter was offensive player of the year and Jessyca Byrne earned the Coach's Award.

The deadline is 5 p.m. Friday to purchase tickets for the eighth annual New River Valley Speedway awards banquet, which will be held at 6 p.m. Dec.9 at the Salem Civic Center. Tickets are $20 each and must be ordered or purchased at the speedway. No tickets will be sold at the door.

In addition to honoring the five track champions, the banquet will feature a presentation of the second Curtis Turner Memorial Hard Charger Award, which includes a special trophy and $1,000 from sponsor Heritage Buick/Olds/Pontiac/GMC of Pulaski.

Two players from North Cross, Mary Logan and Anne Lemon, were selected to the Virginia Independent Schools' All-State volleyball team as chosen by a panel of coaches.

The Raiders were the runners-up in the state tournament to Lynchburg Christian, whose coach, Karen Bunting, was named coach of the year. (Complete team in Scoreboard. B5)
