BLACKSBURG NEIGHBORHOOD GROUP HONORS TOWN'S POLICE CHIEF

Blacksburg Police Chief Bill Brown was pleasantly surprised during Tuesday's Town Council meeting when the Blacksburg Neighborhood Federation gave him an Excellence in Leadership award.

The civic group, which has been in existence for 15 years, has given out only one other leadership award. Several years ago, the group presented Town Manager Ron Secrist with a similar plaque.

"We just felt his accomplishments called for it," said Tom Hunt, who presented the award.

In giving Brown the plaque, Hunt cited Brown's 20 years on the Blacksburg police force, with his start as a patrolman and eventual climb to the top position. Hunt also pointed out Brown's upcoming graduation from Bluefield College in December.

Brown smiled as well-wishers congratulated him. "I was shocked," he said.
